Wheat/ gluten intolerance what do you eat?

Hi all. I seem to have developed an intolerance to the above. This doesn't always happen, but when it does, I'm up all night in agony with pains that seem worse than labour pains. I very nearly called the ambulance last night it was that bad. I get a pain that feels like it's shooting through my back and then it moves. All I had yesterday was shredded wheat, tomato pasta and cracker bread.

I've had this reaction when I eat pizza. So if I can't eat pizza or pasta ( my two favourite things) what can I eat without feeling like I'm going to give birth all night?

Not gf but have a friend who I cater for.

Rice, potatoes, gf pasta get used a lot.

Have you been tested for coeliac disease? You need to still be eating gluten when blood test is done. You can now get good gluten free pasta and pizza so can still eat those if you want! I eat more salad and veg and rice and potatoes instead of pasta.

Thank you I'm going to head down to the shops and get some. I honestly can't go through the agony of the pain of last night again. I reckon I'm going to drop some weight here too.

I used to get exactly those types of pains when I ate gluten. Accompanied by dizzy spells, tiredness, vomiting and some weight loss.

If you suspect coeliac disease it would be worth hanging in there for blood test results before you cut it out. I don't test positive on the blood tests and haven't had a biopsy although my iron levels do rise when I'm gluten free and 2 cousins have since been diagnosed.

I eat a lot of brown basmati rice, potatoes and sweet potatoes. Quinoa is lovely. GF pasta is ok, you can get quite a few different types now. Genius is my favourite for bread. War buttons wraps are yummy but expensive. Doves Farm do good flour mixes. Corn flour to thicken sauces. Wheat / gluten is in so much stuff.

Warburtons! What are war buttons? Damn you autocorrect.

A lot of jacket potatoes and a lot of gluten free pasta

Thank you all. I honestly thought I was giving birth to a secret baby. The pain is exactly the same as my back to back labour. I honestly don't think I can do it again. I've had to take today off work I've been up all night. I will stock up on potatoes . Thanks

Do go to the doctor and ask for a coeliac test - it is really important to get diagnosed if you are coeliac.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 01/07/2014 13:23

Mine isn't celiacs, but probably connected to another auto immune disease I've got. Am still trying to figure out what causes mine. I get tiredness/fatigue and malaise. I get the pain you describe with constipation.

A lot of people are allergic/intolerant to tomatoes, so consider that too. Tomatoes are related to potatoes, aubergines, chili & sweet peppers.

I've been cutting out the whole lot this last month and have just reintroduced the nightshade (tomato family) foods and that is not too bad, so now I can have potatoes. Before that I was using roast parsnips (freezer bag) or home roast root veggies instead.

Gluten free wraps are good instead of bread and quinoa instead of couscous/grains. I just don't bother eating pastry now as that seems to be one of the worst things.

Thanks all off to the doctors I shall go!

Yes do go to the doctor. Plus you can get help with the gluten free food via prescription. So it's worth a shot.

Looseleaf · 01/07/2014 21:05

I've given up even on many gluten free foods as reacting to rice and corn too (I'm not alone apparently but feels like it).

I'm actually eating better and feeling healthier without the GF pizza &longlife bread etc. I eat more fresh stuff or fill up on root veg (like swede for a change from potatoes!), bowls of natural yoghurt full of seeds and fruit, lentils, GF oatcakes with cheese. I like Tesco GF muesli too

ChickenMe · 10/07/2014 19:00

I do use GF pasta but I often make meals like chilli or just meat with salad and sometimes potatoes. I eat a lot of potatoes. I hate gluten free bread but I have made gf cupcakes with the doves farm flour. I'm not even coeliac to my knowledge although id like to be checked. Thing is, to be tested you need to eat gluten for 6 weeks and that'll make me feel ill.
