Hello.
My dd is allergic to many everyday foods. At school today she was given a sandwich, which was gluten free, but contained egg white.

She took a bite and immediately felt something funny in her throat. She told her teacher straightaway and was give piriton quite quickly.

I gave her piriton when she came home at 3.30 as she said her throat was still hurting her, when she swallows. She has had piriton again at 7 and I have given her some more just now. She is still saying her throat hurts her, so I am wondering if I should be taking her to see an out of hours emergency doctor.

She doesn't have any hives, and seems fine in herself, but obviously I am concerned that if her throat is hurting that there may be some sort of swelling there?

I usually panic in these situations but am trying to be calm, but I am worried that there may be something else going on, so am asking the very wise people on here first.

What would you do? Take her to a&e? Get an out of hours appointment for her? Do nothing?

Many thanks for your help.

You're doing the right thing by calling NHS direct. It would have been my advice.

trixymalixy · 23/06/2014 22:26

Yy to NHS direct. Hope all is ok.

ukey · 23/06/2014 22:26

is her breathing etc ok?

mumat39 · 23/06/2014 22:57

Her breathing is fine. She's fallen asleep finally.

My DP thinks she'll be fine and just needs some sleep, so I haven't called them yet, but as you think I should I will do. Thankyou for replying. Xxx

Hello again.

Just posting an update here. DD was so fast asleep that I decided not to ring NHS direct. I got her medicines incl Epipen and our phone and went and slept in her bed so I could keep an eye on her.

She slept really soundly and woke up fine this morning. She said her throat was still hurting a bit bit not as badly as the day before so she went to school later than usual.

I spoke with the teachers and they are going to ensure that then canteen staff are reminded yet again that they need to check labels etc.

Thanks so much to everyone for your replies. I was trying not to panick, but was worried that her throat was hurting due to swelling. I emailed her allergy nurse last night as well to see if she can have a word with the school, again, to remind them of what they already know.

I know accidents happen, but this was completely avoidable if the label on the pack of bread had been read. [sigh]

I'd sort of hit used to the school doing so well with food, that I'd let my guard down a bit and started to relax a little, but it guess this is a reminder that my DD's allergies are well and truly very real.

Thanks again to you all. I haven't really been on MN for a while so it's good to know I can always come back and get some really good help and advice here, especially from some familiar posters.

Thanks Xxx

I meant to say sorry for not posting earlier, I didn't get much sleep last night so have been a zombie for much of the day.
