Breastfeeding and nut / egg allergies

I posted already about a cryptic letter from the allergy clinic suggesting my baby has a nut allergy as well as confirming an egg allergy. I have spoken to GP (clueless) and looked online (conflicting) and called allergy clinic (no joy yet) but essentially I want to know - should I be excluding egg and nuts from my diet while breastfeeding 9mo?

Apparently arrangements were made for a dietician to call me a month ago but haven't heard anything yet and in the absence of any other info am trying to work out whether to exclude these from my own diet or not.

Also - does anyone have any advice on what kind of telltale reaction signs to look for while weaning? To date I've only been looking for major reactions like the gasping/hives she had to egg, but now am worried that the flushed faces I put down to heat, the never ending snot, the unpredictable nappies etc might be related to her diet.

I would cut these out of my diet if i was breastfeeding and knew about my child's allergies. it can only help. my DS1 had a delayed reaction to tomatoes - rash over all his body which didn't really bother him when weaning.

My DS reacted to various foods through my breast milk, and I was forever told it is not possible. Bollocks to that!

He got really, really red face, would pull at his face and ears and had a constant snotty nose. Terrible eczema and projectile vomiting. All throughy breast milk.

Try to get a referral to peadiatric allergist.

Ok thanks both. Change - we got referred to st thomas' allergy clinic after an egg reaction and they did skin/blood tests for milk/eggs/nuts, they've cc'd us in on a letter to GP confirming egg & nuts but there is NO follow up plan beyond "a dietician will contact wtftodo"... presumably though we've already been seen by a paediatric allergist so how would I get a referral back to them? I'm feeling totally adrift - no advice from them whatsoever..

We usually have a conversation with the allergists at st thomas which concludes with we would like to see DS1 again in 12 months or such and this goes on the form you hand into the desk when you leave. Give them a call and ask them as it will be on the system.

Wtfdo, we were also referred to st Thomas's. did you meet a dietician on the day? I'm surprised they haven't followed you up. Our dietician wrote to us and I've been in regular contact with her via email and phone. I can give you the dietician number at at st Thomas and leave them a message, they will get back to you. Paper work must have got lost.

Meanwhile yes, the advice is for you to stop eating it too, as it definitely does pass through Breast milk. I know it's a pain but at least it's not dairy or wheat!

For my dd signs normally are (not all at the same time):
Hives
Rash (flaky)
Runny nose
Crying in pain at night
Clingyy!

Pashmina we saw a dr who took a history (badly - and I also missed things out as was stopping newly mobile baby from destroying the room). She referred us for the blood tests - though she said she'd request others eg shellfish, soy that weren't actually done. That was ALL. No advice / explanation - in fact the only comment she made was "did you cut dairy out of your diet after baby reacted to formula? No? Then she isn't allergic to cmp". When I called chasing the blood results the person who spoke to us said a letter was in the post and no follow up appointment had been booked.

Shine - that would be amazing, thank you. On the day we had skin prick tests, saw a Dr who took history and referred for blood tests, had blood tests, went home. Thanks for advice re signs. All of these ring true.

Think I will try the allergy clinic again tomorrow...

The proteins definitely pass through breastmilk, so I would cut them out of your diet. DS had multiple allergies and I was told there was no way he was reacting to what I was eating, the GP was totally wrong.

With DD I was hyper alert while feeding her for any reaction. The one time I had egg her face went bright red. Lo and behold when they tested her at 6 months old she was allergic to egg.

ShineSmile · 23/06/2014 22:38

Wtftodo, I have PMd you the direct line to the dieticians. Also yes, paediatrician told us that proteins do pass through and the NICE guidelines clearly spell that out too. I don't know why the GPs and some paediatricians are so clueless! Confused
