Suncream help please?

I have never got along well with suncream (which was really useful when growing up in Australia as a fair-skinned red-head...Hmm) and unfortunately 2yo DS appears to have my sensitivity to it - streaming nose, red-rimmed runny eyes and sneezing, especially when it's on his face. He also gets cranky with it on, which I can understand as it's incredibly uncomfortable - it makes my eyes sting horribly, so I'm sure it does his as well.

I've tried numerous brands, including every 'sensitive' brand going with no success, so I just stay in or stay covered up, which is no odds to me, but DS loves being outdoors. Has anyone/anyone's DCs had a similar reaction and found a brand which is OK? I'd really rather not load him up on antihistamines every time he needs suncream.

TIA! Smile

Have you tried Ultrasun? It's worked wonders with my DS, although it was only his skin that reacted to other creams, not his eyes or anything like your DS

After trying every suncream on the market (at great expense) which all exacerbated my daughter's eczema the dermatologist at the local hospital recommended Sunsense (which I think is Australian) which works for us.

I actually discovered piz buin allergy spray works for us , factor 30 .

MarianForrester · 22/06/2014 20:30

Try a barrier, rather than a chemical, suncream. The Badger ones have worked well for us.

Green people or Lavera.

Waltonswatcher · 23/06/2014 06:12

I bought green people and dd had awful reaction , just on the back of her neck as the rest of her was clothed...argh

NiceCupOfTeaAndASitDown · 23/06/2014 06:56

DS had the same sort of reaction and his eyes got really puffy, I've found its fine on his body but on his face I use a stick suncream from boots..I think I found it in the travel section with all the little ones. I think because it's less likely to melt and run into his eyes he doesn't react to it so that might be worth a go

Dr will give you one on prescription

ElphabaTheGreen · 23/06/2014 09:34

Thanks everyone. I might try the stick suggestion first because it sounds the cheapest then try the others if no luck.

cariad The one on prescription from the doctor - is that one just for skin reactions though? It's never bothered his skin - it just seems to give him a hayfever-like reaction.

Badger Balm sun cream - £18.45 for 87mL on Amazon! ShockShock

I like the sound of it but can you get it cheaper?!

I don't know. It is expensive, but very thick, so you don't actually use as much.

It has been great for me (blue white with sun allergy); dd with suncream allergy, band young ds, and has made it possible for us to go on really hot holidays with no burning. Sometimes some of the health/ eco stores have it cheaper.
