Toxic reaction to lemon juice

My DS's eczema flared up a couple of weeks ago after I had tried to clobber my cold with hot lemon juice drinks (breastfeeding). Today I told DS'S dermatologist and he said it wasn't an allergic reaction but a toxic reaction. I googled on toxic reaction to citrus fruit and citric acid but couldn't find anything. Has anyone heard about this before? Does it mean that while I am bfing I have to steer clear of citrus fruits? Does it mean that he shouldn't have anthing with orange or lemon it (I don't give him orange juice or anything - but he loves those fruity bar things and some of them are orange).

TIA, Sim

PS: he had the prick test for milk and eggs (which I posted about before) today and was given the all clear.

It could be totally unrelated. Haven't heard of it before via breastmilk. My eldest ds came out is a terrible rash the first time he had a satsuma (age 13 months). Doctor said it was reaction to first one really. Did not happen again when he tried one again when he was older. I doubt that you would have a direct reaction like that via breastmilk. Could be other factor.

I am almost certain dd had reaction (in form of eczema worsening) to citrus, up to about age 2,(not sure about when I was b/f ...although some dr's did seem to not agree with it. Others said it was possible, so I assume it could be possible, however, I don't know anything about it being a toxic reaction?!

A baby with an intolerance can react to something that the mother has eaten if she is breastfeeding. Citrus fruits are quite common allergens and I remember being told by my ante-natal class midwife that oranges could affect a baby through breastmilk.

If you're brave enough to rub an area of his skin with a little juice for a patch test you might get an answer.

I've not heard of a 'toxic reaction' either.

Did you make the drinks from fresh lemon juice directly from lemons? Some presqueezed lemon juices have preservatives that can aggravate asthma and excema.

Sofia, I did make it from fresh lemons. I may do a little test at the next opportunity - having witnessed the allergy testing the other day I have an idea of what to do.

Funnily, I have never been diagnosed with any allergy or intolerance but I avoid orange juice as it makes me congested. Dairy products make me congested too but they are much harder to avoid so I just put up with it, although when I have a cold I avoid most of them. Maybe I am the next one who should be tested?
