Dairy free...

How long did it take after you went dairy free to notice an improvement in your BF LO? Could be imagining this; was v strict for 2 days then on 3rd day had warmed milk & some cream cheese frosting & a few chocolates. Hadn't really noticed much improvement per se, but on the evening of day 3 (about 6-8hrs after ingesting first dairy) had screaming sessions & uncomfortable crying during night feeds. First real crying in a few days. Coincidence?

I think you would need to do it for at least 2 weeks (at the very least), I mean be completely dairy free for at the minimum 2 weeks and then re-introduce milk and see what happens.

Completely dairy includes things like whey in ingredients etc.

Dairy can take weeks to leave BM. We noticed an improvement within a week or two but that continued the longer I was off it. My son has a full on allergy though not just an intolerance.

My son is still being investigated so not confirmed yet but I noticed an improvement within 2 days then he continued to improve for a couple of weeks. Apparently it takes 3 weeks to get fully clear of it after stopping. By the way if you are cutting out dairy you need to cut out soya too as 40% of dairy intolerant babies are also soyaItintolerant.

Thk you all! Yes, I've avoided Soya also & I'm checking all packets for Whey/Casein as well as the obvious milk powders. The crying windy behaviour has continued this morning so I think I'll give it another go for the next couple of weeks. Did any of you notice any change in yourselves going dairy free?

I went dairy free when my LO was about 3 months. At the point I didn't see a difference. But I think this was because I had way too much apple juice and orange juice as substitues for not being able to have milk, and I didn't realise then that that made my LO's reflux worse! So I thought dairy free wasn't helping.

However at 5 months when LO was weaned we immediately saw a reaction to milk powder. I then went partially dairy free and it seemed to make a difference, but I made a mistake and didn't go completely dairy free (GPs kept telling me it was fine for me to have it).

Our worst night of being unsettled was when I had pizza from Pizza Hut and that night was horrendous. I the just knew what despite what the peadetrician and GPs are saying that I can carry on having milk, it does go through to breast milk and affect baby.

Recently I had an appointment with a specialist allergy peadetrician who confirmed that the milk proteins definitely do go through to breast milk, and my baby's hourly night wakenings and general unsettledness could be related to that.

I noticed a distinct improvement within a couple of days. Only problem was I started using soya milk and ate some eggs. I hadn't counted on multiple allergies.

Yes I feel loads better myself although I wouldn't have said I felt ill before if you see what I mean. I just have a lot more energy and less bloated. I'm seriously considering staying dairy free after I've finished bf now that I have felt the benefit. Although I do miss cheese!

TheStorySoFar · 20/05/2014 12:51

Thk you! Yes, 3boys I definitely feel way less bloated already. I really miss my morning milky coffee. There do seem to be lots of dairy free alternatives to foods (if my small local supermarkets stock them that is ;-0
Trixy, do you mean you noticed an improvement in your LO?

Been dairy & soy free for two years now and I feel pretty good for it.

I'm also able to maintain a healthy weight without much effort, which is nice!

Ds is CMPI and I've been dairy free for a year now. I've found if I've had something ( or more likely he has ) it takes 2 weeks to be back to normal. He has a couple of nights of cramps & wind and horrendous poo.
