Epipen Junior stock problems

Mefisto · 16/05/2014 16:08

I'm having problems at the moment getting hold of epipens (epipen junior) for DS - apparently there is a manufacturing problem. Is anyone else having problems and if so have you found an alternative epipen? I was prescribed an alternative but the pharmacist said it was adult strength so not suitable (DS is 3). Does anyone have any advice?

You could ask for a Jext pen to be prescribed instead. I know some on here have them for their DC, so there must be a junior version. I have also heard of a brand called anapen, but that might just be in the US.

Ok thanks for that suggestion, will speak to GP on Mon.

oh not aware of this, i would ask for the prescription back and go round all ur local pharmacys and ask if they have any in stock.

misdee · 16/05/2014 22:24

We have jext for dd4 who is 5.

harverina · 19/05/2014 08:03

Yes we have Jext for dd who is 4. We actually have a mix but our gp has moved to Jext because it has a longer shelf life

Thanks babybarrister. I spoke to my local pharmacist a couple of days ago who was hopeful that some should come into stock by tomorrow. If they don't I will get in touch with the Anaphylaxis Campaign. It's quite shocking to find that stock is so hard to come by for such an essential item. I have epipens at home and at DS's nursery but both expire in June so getting a bit twitchy!

The new Emerade www.emerade.com/ is now available in the UK - can be prescribed by GP and at wholesalers. Changing device does carry some risks so get the trainer pen via the website and get all parents, carers to go on the website / check with a pharmacist how to do it. A bit more bulky than JEXT and Epipen :( but only one end (needle cover) to remove in a crisis so really simple :)

nochips01 · 23/05/2014 14:51

Yes!!!! Also problems (South east) and DH just asked the pharmacist in London and they said it is UK-wide. Our allergy clinic told me that if the liquid in the epripen is still clear you can use it beyond the expiry date.

I agree about a campaign. It is such a critical item.

nochips01 · 23/05/2014 14:54

babybarrister I also was told what you said about people on Jext also from our local Boots.

Mefisto · 23/05/2014 17:35

Thanks BanyBarrister for suggesting AC. They sent me this link and also recommended the Emerade, manufactured by Imed and distributed by AAH. All a bit alarming.

Hi- had Trouble with Login, hence The Delay in My reply Sorry - This is The latest Info about The current Stockung Problems: AnaphylaxisCampaignNews

Please keep in mind that it is essential to get proper Training on The Injector regularly and especially when a different Type was prescribed. There are currently 3 AAI on The UK market: EPIPEN, JEXT and EMERADE EMERADE. The EMERADE Comes in 3 different doses and 2 Needle Sizes, which is unique. It has a longer shelf Life compared to E. And J. And remember to update everyone (Nursery school, Friends, Family) about any changes in your AAI prescription. Part of The shortage may be explained by issues with The JEXT Earlier this year and EPIPEN Might have been overwhelmed by The sudden increase in demand? Hope this helps

I put a prescription in for a couple of epi-pens 10 days ago and the chemists still don't have them in stock. I knew we'd be waiting but I wonder how long for Confused.

The allergy specialist who looks after my son said that the Jext pens are usually fine for quite a long time after the expiry date. I just managed to get a new one but the ones at nursery are also about to run out so am hoping I can get some more.
