Sudden onset of egg allergy in adulthood?

Does anyone have experience of this? I have always eaten eggs but over the last few months seem to have developed an allergy to them. I get very bloated and have a terrible pain in my back, reminds me of previous gallstone pain but I have had my gallbladder removed.

This morning I had a similar reaction after breakfast, granola with milk. I also seem to have developed hayfever!

Does anyone have experience of developing allergies in adulthood and why it suddenly happens? Google doesn't have much information on egg allergies in adults as it appears to be rare. Help!

I have developed asthma as an adult and allergies to animals. Had asthma for 3 and a bit years now, before then never had it at all. Now I have it very badly.

Anyone can become allergic to anything at anytime.

Can you see GP on Tuesday? How are you feeling now?

Thanks for your reply!

Feel fine now, obviously with food allergies it's easier to avoid things. I think the dr is the best bet especially for the hayfever as I'm breastfeeding so not sure what I can take.

I didn't 'get' hay fever until I was 21 and pregnant with dc1.

This evening I've had a reaction to something in/on a dominos chicken and sweetcorn pizza. Quite scary as didn't react until the 3rd slice then all of a sudden difficulty to breath and pain in my lips and inside of cheeks could feel myself swelling up. In a way luckily dd1 has allergies and we had emergency treatment here. So now have to try and work out what it was that cause the reaction.

My uncle developed a serious allergy to duck eggs in the last year. About 5 years ago he had a duck egg and was sick the next day. Thought nothing more of it until he had a duck egg in a cake about a year ago. This has now progressed to not being able to sit on his friends sofa that was stuffed with duck feathers.

He now has an epi pen and the doctor has warned him to avoid chickens eggs too. He said it could develop into a serious allergy to all eggs. I would go to the doctor if I was you and get proper allergy tests done.

Developing food allergies can be a sign of conditions that damage the gut- allowing larger food "bits" to leak across the gut wall into the bloodstream. This can cause allergy and autoimmune problems.

Coeliac, colitis and similar conditions might be worth looking into especially if you have other markers (IBS, bloated after eating, headachy/migraine, skin rashes or roughness, diagnosis of any autoimmune condition... And so on).

As you already have had gallbladder surgery, and have similar symptoms now I'd say the above is relevant (you might want to google "gallbladder and coeliac disease" and "gallbladder and autoimmunity" and have a wee read!

OP - my dp was recently diagnosed (after a blood and sensitivity tests) as having an intolerance to eggs as well as a mild allergy to yeast and a severe allergy to wheat. He'd eaten all of them freely his whole life without problems until around 12-18 mths ago when he started to notice symptoms. So yes it's definitely possible.

Raw Thank you for writing that - it certainly makes sense to me. I've always thought I was mildly intolerant to wheat or gluten due to symptoms when I eat it. After having a quick google it seems I fit in with the gallbladder theory - off for a deeper read.
