How much do you rely on calcium supplements for your allergic DCs?

Just wondering because my DS (with IgE-mediated allergies to milk, wheat, eggs, sesame, some pulses and nuts) will now refuse all other alternative calcium sources (soya yoghurts, fortified orange juice, tinned fish, Readybrek, dried fruit, milk alternatives like Oatly) and if it weren't for Osteocare he wouldn't be getting any calcium at all. But I'm worried that he's not getting any from food sources and that relying on a supplement is not very good for him. Anyone in a similar situation? I was hoping he'd outgrow at least one of the allergies by now (almost four) but two recently 'failed' food challenges have dashed those hopes...

I have several food sensitivities including dairy. I use Koko milk which has added calcium.

I am slightly sensitive to many nuts but seem ok with Koko milk. (coconut)

I eat quite a few non-mainstream foods such as quinoa, buckwheat, and seaweed.

Thanks, choco. Koko is very nice and DS used to love it but (as with many foods) he now rejects it. Good to hear that buckwheat has calcium, though, as he eats loads of that!

Buckwheat doesn't have much calcium I'm afraid, but quinoa has some.

we do a lot of fish here ....plus some supplements!

ZebraZeebra · 24/04/2014 18:23

Da can't have

ZebraZeebra · 24/04/2014 18:24

Sorry phone!

DS can't have nut, soya, cows or coconut milk so I give him figs - figs are really up there in terms of being densely packed with calcium. He won't eat them outright so I blend them into portions of soup/chilli/curry/ pasta sauces.

Tinned fish with bones in it are a very high source of calcium. Thes bones become very soft during the canning process and are so soft can be mashed into the flesh easily. Tinned sardines and salmon are best. Great for making fishcakes.

Tofu is also a very high source of calcium.

deepinthewoods · 24/04/2014 18:39

Sorry- didn't see the bit about soya- scrub the tofu.

Thanks for your advice! I like the idea of blending figs and tinned fish into stuff, although I'm such an uninspired cook that I fear the result will be unpalatable! deep, my DS used to eat an entire can of sardines in one sitting but at the age of 2 suddenly started to refuse his favourite foods (I think we'd overdone it, tbh). Do you happen to have a fishcake recipe I could use (if it's not too much hassle?)

Loads of leafy green veg- curly kale chips are great.
Wash and chop ( I buy the ready sliced bag), sprinkle with olive oil and tiny bit of salt . Make sure its all lightly covered . 140•oven for 15 min.
Fish cakes - one can salmon , handful parsley , chopped spring onion , chopped chilli and three good sized pots mashed( add coconut milk to mash) . Mix well and shape into cakes . Tap into bread crumbs ( hale and hearty gluten free are good too). Leave in fridge for an hour at least and then shallow fry .
Yum !

Thanks so much, Walton! I will try these two and hope DS is feeling slightly more adventurous than usual!

Smoothies with coconut milk are good . I whizz up half a banana, milk , frozen blue berries and frozen raspberries . The frozen fruit keeps it chilled . My teenagers guzzle these too .
