Air travel with Piriton and Epipen. Have you been through that?

We are going in holidays next week and was wondering about how to convince the people from security to allow us to board a plane with two injections and a bottle contained a liquid (Epipens and Piriton).

I have the forms to ask for a repeated prescription for the Epipens and inhaler (DS also has asthma) but, as we have never had piriton in prescription I asked the GP to write a letter specifying which medicines we have to carry around at all times. However... all printouts I have got from the practice have the quality and look of a homemade letterhead paper... would that be OK or is there any sort of "official" form/procedure that must be followed?

Call the airline and ask if you can fax over the letters and get them to acknowledge them and issue you a airline letter stating the items you can carry onboard and that can personally stay in your control.

You may have to be firm at the airport, my sisters friend had her insulin pen taken and kept by on board staff, contravening the airlines own policy!!

Which company was she flying with? (I shudder at the idea of being told to wait for the trolley to be out of the way for them to return the medicine!).

Have sent an e-mail to the company, however... site said they may take them up to 20 days or more to answer!

Easy Jet from Ireland.

Who are you travelling with?

I would call and ask them to follow it up as it is a serious matter and that a few seconds delay could have serious consequences.

Her incident was in May 06, the other issue is that as the medicine was out of her control protocol says she should discard it as it may have been tampered with or incorrectly stored!

I'm sure the same protocols exist for the epipens.

I think medicines are ok, but the liquids thing might raise an issue, maybe you'll have to taste it first?
I am amazed there is not a decent helpine for calling about these things considering recent events.

Thanks for your replies. I will contact the airline tomorrow (today) via telephone after I hear from the GP. In the mean time I have found out that if I tell the senior stewardess that DS is allergic to peanuts they won't sell them during the trip (yay!!)

I have never had problems travelling with medicines before (although this is our first time with epipens), but with the current security climate...
