Hi i'm new to mumsnet i have a 20 month old DS who is allergic to egg and fish also got chronic asthma since summer DS has had sometimes several reactions per day usually just affecting the face but still distressing and a few weeks ago ended up in hospital with an anaphylatic reactions again cause unknown, saw his consultant last week but he was very reluctant about skin testing as he said the results wouldn't be reliable in an atopic child! has anyone had similar experiences.

Gwu, but when you have had no tests done and dont know wxactly what your allergic child is allergic to, then these tests are needed. i suspect that dd1 has a nut allergy, though mildly, the only other way to test this is to give her nuts direct, would you do that?

dd3 also has a suspected egg allergy, i have been told by the GP to dab egg onto her and see what happens. not bloomin likely!!

That's exactly how I've tested DS from the age of 2 years onwards. I've dabbed some of the allergic substance on the hand first, wait 30 mins, if all ok on the lips etc (there's a leaflet our hospital produced going through the whole procedure). For milk, his lips swelled within 10 mins of hand contact so I gave him his strongest antihistamine and aborted the test (will retest 12 months after the last test).

If ones child ever develops a phobia towards hospitals and needles, one is most likely to avoid hospitals, especially for unreliable tests. There's nothing quite as traumatic as pinning your own child down for 45 mins whilst they scream at you and are asking you why you're doing this to them when they thought you loved them (and believe me, I'm no softee having pinned him down for at least 5 canulas and 1 gastric feed tube during his stay in hospital).
