My dad is 7 months and we have suspected diary allergy/intolerance to some extent for a long time. She has been on soya formula since 4mo. For the last month or so with weaning we have been testing her tolerance for diary and she is definitely reacting (eczema) to things we make with milk such as pancakes and to yoghurt, not really cheese. But she doesn't seem to really react to convenience foods with milk ingredients such as fruit custards, rusks / biscuits, jars/pouches etc. Is it to do with the freshness of the milk, the processedness (probably not a word but hope you know what i mean!)? Or is it about the milk content? Has anyone else found this?

And dairy, not diary? :)

My Mum can't drink milk, and can react to fresh cream. She's fine with cheese and yogurts though. For her she believes it is the heat treatment that is the reason. It will change some of the proteins in the milk.

MrsBennetsEldest · 08/04/2014 16:47

It could be the Lactose in the milk, if I remember correctly the bacteria ( or something) used in cheese/yogurt making destroys the sugar ( lactose) in the milk. It's only hard cheese though, doesn't work with soft cheese. Cooking milk has a similar affect.

Lol oops yeah dairy.
No she has been tested for lactose intolerance and that came back fine.

It wouldn't be the lactose if her symptoms are eczema. Lactose intolerance manifests itself with digestive disorders (diarrhoea, bloating, abdo pain). It will be the cows milk protein (casein, lactoglobulins) that she is reacting to. Some of these are destroyed with heat and fermentation. That is why when children outgrow their allergies they start to tolerate milk that has been baked, heat treated, powdered milk first, then yogurts and cheese and finally fresh milk (the most allergenic form.

Pyjama I was replying to 2kids regarding her mother, not to the OP. :)

I am the same as 2kids' mother.

PurpleDana · 12/04/2014 16:51

Ah thanks pyjamas. Explains it a little more, and makes sense.
She has reflux too which may explain why she was tested for li.

thank you that explanation helps me to understand why I can't tolerate the milk in a cup of tea without bloating and wind, but can cope with cheese sauce. I get exczema too, very minor though since I worked out milk was causing issues after I gave up gluten.
