I am looking after a baby who had fab skin but now at almost 12weeks old has white scaly rough patches, the only area unaffected is the nappy area.

He only washed with Halo n Horns then Mum used Infacare bubbles and i noticed his skin was looking dry so we stopped the infacare but continued with the HnH but his skin hasn't improved.

It isn't red or open, he is of Nigerian parents so the dry white patches are very noticeable especially under his chin and on his face.

We have been using Shea oil but with no noticeable difference so have moved to Waitrose Bottom Butter, essentially olive oil with camomile and the whiteness is less pronounced but the roughness is the same.

He is creamed and massaged twice a day.

The only thing i can think of is the detergent, we use Fairy non bio either the liquid or liqutabs on a 30' wash with a 30minute soak and water plus turned on and comfort pure in the softner drawer, just half the reccommended amount and sometimes a tumble dryer sheet on a low temp in the dryer.

Ideas welcome.

try washing with just water and no body washes? Maybe try a different detergent as different ones suit different people.

Thank you.

I will get new detergent and see how we go and have diprobase as a back up.

We have stopped baths at the moment and are doing top and tail with just water as his Mum mentioned she can get dry skin from London water but i would expect it to be all over if it was the water but is not.

Another one here (adult eczema) who has problems with Fairy non-bio - think it's probably the perfume. The only detergents I can use are Surcare and DP Liquid Soap Flakes, both non-perfumed, which I can find in local Tesco and Waitrose or the Waitrose brand liquid detergent for sensitive skin, non-bio and unperfumed. Fabric softeners and tumble dryer sheets are a no-no, I've found, even those which claim to be suitable for sensitive skin. I also do an extra rinse and we have a water softener.
Aveeno works for me as an emollient: for me, the Baby Bottom butter made things worse. Might be due to the natural fragrances ingredients here. I find limonene in anything irritates my eczema but I've also found anything with chamomile or olive oil applied topically makes things worse, not better. But eczema seems to be a highly individual condition so what works for one person may not suit another.
Hope things get better for the little boy. Have his parents sought GP/HV advice?

I will move him onto a different detergent and see how he goes. The white flaky area are definitely less white than before the bottom butter and it has cleared up his scalp so will try changing the soap and see how he does. Thank you.

Well i washed everything he owned last week in Surcare and the family have agreed that Surcare will be used by everyone and already his scaleyness and whitening have reduced :)

Thank you for your help.
