My 2 and 3/4 year old has a dairy and an egg allergy. It was discovered when we started weaning him (rash on face with hives) and diagnosed when he was about a year old (blood test at the hospital). I would like to know what the chances are of his 9 month old brother having the same allergies? Does anyone know or have children and siblings with the same allergies? Thanks.

my sis and brother and I all had allergies, as did our father, his father etc.

my children havent shown any signs yet though

to answer your question a bit more specifically, we all have milk allergy. I am also allergic to wheat, yeast, tomatoes, however these allergies are not shared by my siblings. One has no other allergies appart from milk, the other has the egg allergy amongst others.

Oh I hope you get some more answers! My dd [2.8] is also has egg and dairy allergy [discovered first during exclusive breast-feeding, so through the nutrients passed through me] and we're expecting dd2 in Oct, so I was also wondering the likelihood of dd2 also being allergic. Hope someone can help us!

My 5 year old has egg, almond, fish and sesame allergies. His 3 year old sister is completely allergy free as far as I know.

I was advised to eliminate all the things he is allergic to from my diet when breastfeeding her and then from 6 mths on to gradually introduce them first to my diet and then to hers.
So far she is a "human dusbin" eating virtually everything and has shown no sign of allergies to anything.
I don't think this is always the case though and it might just be a matter of luck of the draw.
It might be advisable to keep your 9 mth old away from the olders childs food allergens for a bit longer to be on the safe side and introduce them after a year or maybe more but I don't know if there is any firm evidence that this actually makes a difference

Yes the likely hood of a brother or sister to have an allergy is higher if there is some allergy in the family - other child & parents.
However, this is just a probability so it does not mean that all siblings WILL have the same allergies or be affected by one.
It's more of a problem of been more carefull when weaning, avoiding the most allergenic products at the start (dairy, nuts, soya) and introduce them later and slowly.
ds1 was allergic to dairy and egg, grew out of these allergies by about 2 yo. If bf ds2 but he still shown some reaction when it started weaning. I avoided all dairy and egg and by 10 months old, he was OK.

Just a thought. If there is an evident risk of an allergy to dairy, the advise of my dietician was to avoid dairy until 18 months old, soya until 2yo and egg until 2yo.
However, it might not be easy to do depending what your child is happy to eat and that's why we challanged him earlier.

I'm not sure if my 9 month old has any allergies at all. I received no advice whatsoever from my health visitor or Dr. I don't know what to give him instead - he's losing interest in my breast milk and I need to start weaning him onto something else. Any suggestions?

first kids are most likely to be allergic, less risk for others. Don't know if this is because once you have one you're far more careful with the next or for other reasons. My second kid is far less allergic. However atropic families have allergic kids - so still more risk than the non atropic family. Get the allergy bible www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1902757548/026-4168797-5463669?v=glance&n=266239&s=books&v=glance and when weaning stick to the least allergenic foods. From memory (unreliable) pear, lamb, rice, quinoa. Actually I started with apple then carrot - but then I knew nothing.
