Nicest milk alternative?

cyanarasamba · 20/03/2014 19:52

After consulting with our GP, I am planning to try my 3 year old DD on a dairy free diet for 4-6 weeks.

I don't have a lot of money to waste trying lots of different things, so I was hoping for some advice on what might be the most acceptable milk alternative? Shall I try soya, rice, almond, oat, sweetened or unsweetened? I think I could get sway with most things in porridge with added honey, but for drinking or on weetabix I'm expecting her to be a little more picky.

Any insights much appreciated - thanks!

I would say avoid the soya as that can cause a reaction in some people that have milk allergies, that's what my Dr told me anyway. Otherwise I'm not sure still trying them out myself and haven't tried those ones yet.

We were recommend alpro soya 1+ by the dietician, however, like PP said, some people can have issues with soya too, not sure if that was helpful! Sorry Smile

I love almond, I don't have any allergies but I prefer it over anything else

Not rice milk for under 5s.
I prefer Hazelnut milk

I find coconut milk (koko brand - next to long life milk in supermarkets) the closest to cows milk.

ArtFine · 13/04/2014 12:53

And yes I'd second that, definitely avoid soya if you can.

Almond milk for drinking/cereal, soy milk for cooking

trixymalixy · 14/04/2014 18:35

No to rice or soya milk. Anything else would be fine.

We use Oatly or Koko.

atthestrokeoftwelve · 14/04/2014 18:39

I don't use any milk, altenative or otherwise. Just make food that doesn't need milk.

have you tried lactofree milk ? Costs a bit more but it claims to be milk with the lactose removed. I have been trying it with my DS - tastes pretty much the same, but seems to be reducing the symptoms which made us suspect lactose intolerance.

Pancakeflipper · 14/04/2014 18:45

My DS2 opted for oat milk. Still his preferred choice. Loves it on his cereal.

greencybermummy · 15/04/2014 22:11

Oatley all the way in our house.

lucy101 · 15/04/2014 22:21

Oatly here too.

ArtFine · 16/04/2014 18:10

Is the oatly milk gluten free?

trixymalixy · 16/04/2014 19:12

I don't believe Oatly is certified gluten free, but it is low in gluten do some people can tolerate it.

Eyelet · 16/04/2014 19:24

Oatly calcium enriched.

Tasty and cooks well. No rice milk.

Koko has good things in it, long chain fatty acids possibly, like in breast milk. DS doesn't like it though, it is quite thin, about more like skimmed milk and has a faint coconut taste. We use oat milk, used to be oatly but now provitamil. It is creamier and has a faint porridge taste which i prefer. GP recommended soya first but he reacted to that as a baby too so oat was next best choice.
Lacto free isn't dairy free, don't waste your money on that!
Chocolate koko makes a delicious rice pudding.
Vitalite spread is better than pure, in my opinion.
I use alternatives in cooking and no-one notices!
