skin prick tests Friday - eczema, hives and grumpiness by Monday

Hi - my 11mo son had his second lot of skin prick tests on Friday, for egg, peanut, soya, dairy and house dust mites, and yesterday his totally clear face started to get a bit spotty. By this morning, he had a big patch of eczema on his chin, spots all round his eyes, and tons of tiny hives all round his neck and on the top of his arms....and he's been really grumpy all day today.

He had the same tests at 6 months and didn't react like this - is this common or should I speak to the allergy clinic tomorrow?

definitely - and ask them if a dose or 2 of piriton would be advisable- don't e fobbed off (as i was - but we knew so much less then) with -oh, he's ok, i'd leave it for now' - hives, eczema and grumpiness isn't ok when it's so easily eased

ps do you have any chamomile lotion you could slather on him tonight?

Thanks - didn't have time to stay on MN last night. He slept ok last night (probably because he was so knackered from not napping well during the day) - still has hives and really spotty/bumpy patches on his face so I will ring them. It doesn't look like normal eczema, so I'll ask them what I should give him.

I'll have a look for some chamomile lotion as well.

My DS doesn't have skin prick tests anymore because he reacts so badly to them - whole body gets red, blotchy and itchy then his eczema flares up and it takes days or even weeks to get it back under control. He just has blood tests now.

freefrommum - that's interesting, we haven't even heard of having the option of blood tests. I'm waiting for a call back from the clinic now - the GP was useless "oh, isn't that strange, I wouldn't know anything about it"???

How frustrating for you. Blood tests are a good option but I think there are only so many things they can do blood tests for so not as wide a check as skin prick test. I get eczema and allergic rashes which are bright red and bumpy all over. Soya and nuts does it to me.

Well, another visit to the GP and this one said that the tests wouldn't have done it, so I have no idea what to think - his eyes are all puffy, he's grumpy as hell, his face looks horrendous and he won't stop scratching. I've been told to give him piriton and it "should" go away.

There hasn't been any new food for about 2 weeks (and that was a mango), no other changes in the house and no new chemicals around.

I'm so over sodding allergies already!

Wonder if it's a contact allergy then? Grass, or tree pollen of some sort? Has he been out to a park you haven't visited before? Been exposed to someone's cat/dog for the first time?

Allergies can make you crazy...

Hmm, that's what I was dreading - I took him on a 2.5 hour walk that weekend in the countryside, but he was in the pram the whole time, and I would have expected him to get a runny nose/eyes, not just eczema (but I don't really know about hayfever, something else to research).

Skin almost cleared now, so it was obviously something specific to that weekend - I guess all I can do is take him on the same walk again and see if the same thing happens.
