Lactose is quite common. Anything with the prefix 'lact' will be milk based: lactose, lactoglobulin, lactate, lactoferrin...

There are loads of other things which contain 'hidden' milks unfortunately. There's quite a good list in the book: "Your allergy free diet plan for babies and children" by Caroline Humphries, which also contains lists of surprise sources of milk.

Alternatively, I'm sure a guick google search might come back with useful lists for you.

we were given a list of all the names that we should avoid, and for milk/dairy it says:

milk, milk solids, whey, skimmed milk powder, butter, non fat milk solids, lactose, cream, cheese and cheese powder, ghee, margarine or shortening containing milk products, yoghurt/fromage frais, whey/hydrolised whey protein, casein/caseinates,hydrolysed casein, whey syrup sweetner, hydrolysed whey sugar.

The one that I got confused about was lactic acid as it sounds so similar...but apparently that is fine!

Hope this helps!!

Lactic acid is fine - it isn't produced from Milk. All food labels should now state whether a product contains milk, even if it isn't immediately obvious from the ingredients. Look for the "Allergy Advice" section.

Sainsbury's will provide you with a list of all the products sold in its store which are dairy free.
