Ebf baby - red rash on face immediately after formula bottle?

Hi
My dd is 17 weeks and ebf. I have recently started to (try) and give her one bottle a day. I put 4 oz of aptamil (powdered) and she only ever takes 1-2 oz. almost immediately when she has it she gets a red rash on her chin, cheeks, upper lip - I'm guessing all places where milk has dribbled. Could this be a milk allergy? Or an allergy to the teat of the bottle? The rash is not raised and goes away again by about 3 hours later. Worried to persevere with the bottle as if a couple oz cause this what would a full bottle do?
She also has very runny poo the next poo after the bottle.
Could anyone share any ideas or have any similar experience? The formula is aptamil first, powdered. Same problem with cartons but poo's even more runny and explosive.

I would just say some formulas also have soya in.
Mine would be sick from formula, i was sure it was milk but it is soya (she now drinks cows milk)
I also have hayfever, and other allergies.
Its prob the cmp but just thought id say.
Mine used to poop so much and sleep really badly until i excl it from my food.

Naty1 - what kind of foods did you have to exclude re soya? I never thought of that. My dd does indeed poo a lot (like water) and sleeps badly! I also have hayfever.

:( chocolate, most ice creams biscuit yoghurt
So lots of things that also have milk.
Its in some tinned sauces, altogether a lot more than i would have expected.
I suppose ok if i was really into healthy eating.
(Its also in bread but that doesnt seem to bother her)
On another thread someone said theirs was allergic to both milk and soya

This happened to DS the first few times we tried to introduce formula when was 6mths - to give me the odd break from BF.

After the third time he got a mad rash all over - what I now know is hives. He's almost 5yrs and not had dairy again.

I would talk to GP and consider getting allergist referral.

Does sound like cmp allergy to me. Where we are the medical teams are v reluctant to do allergy testing and advise that you find out about allergies by doing food challenges ie trying them with things, and if they react cutting it out - if reaction goes, then the assumption is that theya re indeed allergic. The good news is that most kids grow out of it, so we are advised to do another challenge every few months with a tiny bit of the allergy-causing food.
Just one thing to look out for - now that your baby has been exposed to dairy directly through formula she may start to react to it in your breast milk. I wouldn't worry if y are not seeing any sign of a reaction, but if she starts having bad poo etc and hasn't had formula it may be an idea for you to cut out dairy yourself. (It's not as bad as it sounds! I have more or less cut it out and now prefer being non dairy.)
And egg allergy can go hand in hand with cmp but it would be v unlikely for yr daughter to react to it through your bm if she has never eaten it directly herself. Maybe the omelette and bad tummy were just a coincidence?
I would ask for referral to dietician or paediatrician through your Gp or health visitor. And it might be an idea to go armed with a food diary.
Good luck!

Thanks for the new replies everyone.
I've stopped dairy myself since the first gp appt nearly 2 weeks ago -hasn't actually been too hard (except when it comes to cheese!) I think there has been a slight improvement but I think the poster saying she may now react to dairy thru my bm is right...her poo's went back to standard bf poo for a couple of days then when I had a sneaky bit of cheese and a few cups of tea with normal milk the next day the poos were watery again.
I've got another gp appt on Monday, so can now go armed with evidence re trying other formula brands, cutting out dairy etc.

Good luck!

What would you say is standard, not sure ever had that as she pooped so much around 5 times a day when she was little. Never went 1 day without.
But at 20m still never has although now on cows milk it is fewer down to 2-3 so think may be her now.
I tried telling dr at 5m i thought it was excessive and he said in usual range.

Auntierosemary · 29/01/2014 21:27

My husband poos three times a day. He has no allergies and appears to be otherwise healthy. And I'm sure he would be delighted to know he is being held up as an example of a normal pooer on mumsnet.

Cakeismymaster · 29/01/2014 21:27

Yes naty - she has never gone a day without going, a good day maybe 3 poos and a bad day could be 5 - so standard poo is the yellow seedy mustard poo, and the problem poo is still mustard colour but totally watery - like you had mixed mustard and water together and poured into a nappy, and always leaks out into her clothes.
Sorry everyone for the poo talk!

I think i said before we had lots of leaks too.
I think now she take after OH (no allergies on his side though)
It gets better on solids or did for her.

Quick update - went back for 2nd gp appt and doctor said is likely to be cmpi. Told me to stay off dairy, and once weaning keep dd off dairy. Suggested a monthly dairy challenge direct to dd from around 9 mths, first on her skin and if no rash etc give her a small amount of it to drink/eat and record reaction. Repeat each month and he seems to think she will grow out of it.
In the 3 weeks since I cut out dairy she is down to once a day poo (still v watery) and I have also learnt that when she has the stringy mucous in there is usually if I've had a small amount of dairy - the worst reaction is definetly to milk, cream and cheese.
The gp was very pro bf and there was no way in the world he has going to issue a prescription for the special formula - his words 'so continue to bf her until she is 1 unless you specifically need to switch to formula, then I will have to give you a prescription'. He also completely poo pooed the advice by other doc to try another brand as he said all formulas are virtually the same because of regulations.
Currently eating my way thru all the items on the dairy free finds thread! Smile

Your gp sounds pretty helpful on the whole, glad you are getting some good advice and help! Just a couple of things - we were told by dietician not to do a food challenge until our baby was one, though she had a confirmed allergy. Also, when you do do challenge, start with cooked milk, ie in a biscuit or something similar that contains a little milk, and let your child have one a day for a week or so. Can take a while for reaction to start and you don't want to put lots in their system.
Other thing is that bf til a year would be great but isn't always that easy. If it doesn't work out for you, babies can be prescribed cmp-free milk from younger age (from birth, in fact). But yr doc is right about other normal, shop bought formula, they are all largely the same and most importantly all contain cmp, apart from soya formula which prob isn't a great idea anyway.
Glad things are going well, thanks for the update!
