I know that sounds really bizarre, but dd has apparantly come down with a bout of infected eczema, immediately following a nasty bit of impetigo (so much so that i can't 100% sure tell which is which).

She suffered very mildly as a baby, but until now (3) has not been too bad. Her legs are riddled with rashy bits, her arms becoming more so..... so what should i be dressing her in? she favours dresses/skirts but it looks awful and i don;t want her to be stared at etc (does that sound an awful thing to say) or people to think she is contagious. HOwever obviously my primary concern is her comfort. she's not done much scratching yet, so that's good. BUt is she best in cotton trousers or is it best to let the air get to her and keep her in skirts?

I know it sounds airy fairy, but I am not totally convinced about what it is... the nurse said the extra bits were deffo not impetigo, but was muttering about allergic reactions before saying it was eczema, and prescribing fucidin hydro cortisone stuff and e45 (I already have a different one, i forget the name, from back when she was tiny. which is best as one to slather her in?)

SHe said we should see an improvement within 5 days, so do you think i should book an app for early next week, actually with dr just in case.. cos I am not convinced. My instincts were right though. DH was telling me it was a spread of impetigo, and i was adament it looked a different sort of rash, but i was starting to doubt myself. feeling better about my instinct now, whatever it is!!!!

sorry to wafffle.

tia.

dd1 is covered in eczema. she is wearing cotton t-shirts, and cotton skirts/shorts/or loose trousers. i dont care if people stare at her, i know its just eczema, dd1 knows its just eczema and tells people that. she does wish she had different skin tho

e45 is pants IMO. dd1 just got Aveeno on perscription, we are 2nd day iof using it, and her skin is softer already.

dont slather on hydrocortisone, did they give you cream or ointment? apply the fucidin H to the sore bits only. has she got a bath oil to use as well?

BernieBear · 27/07/2006 13:14

Will second the Aveeno usage. They have just started doing a Lavender version of Aveeno, which can be quite cooling in this weather - I used it on my ds during Chicken pox as he was unable to use Calamine.

You both have my sympathies.

Fuciden H worked well on the "open wound" type skin for my ds.

my ds only has terrible eczema in the summer, he's 12 and knows what he feels comfortable in, but we have been using PROTOPIC ointment, prescribed by consultant, then repeat script from GP and it is FANTASTIC hth x

Diprobase cream is good for the daytime as seems to rub in easily and not leave greasy residue which in turn can heat them up

I have also had my leave creams inthe fridge "tip" posted on homepage but it does work for us

also, if your DD is 3, when she wants to scratch you can start teaching her "coping" methods now, eg patting hands together or on sore bits, keeping something in fridge or freezer, eg cold plastic beaker (with water in or not) and let her pat the sore bits with that

re clothes: linen or v light 100% cotton, pref. longer sleeves and longer in the leg, so that she won't be tempted to scratch all the time

At night: Fucidin on, then Dirpobase ointment (or any other heavier cream that works well for you) and bandage the hands / affected areas - gives them a chance to really soak up treatment and not get scratched

DH has passed on alot of these tips as he still suffers

aveeno is fab use lots of it ! we have it from the doctors to, we also use dermalo in the bath , wash all clothes in 'sure care' and dont use any soap on DD at all

It is difficult isn't is to find a balnce with the keeping cool and the stopping scratching. If your DD isn't scratching in the day then don't worry about having it on show if the fresh air helps it to go.
If it is Impetigo you really need to see the doc and get it sorted. DD1 got it in Spain last year and I just thought she was having an outbreak but it cleared very quickly with treatment when diagnosed.
Agree to avoid E45 -Aveeno much better and second the slathering on of grease at night - DD! (2.5) has just learnt not to scratch at night and for the first time ever can sleep wearing only Epaderm and no tights. We have a fan in her room too.
Remember when using HC to use it sparingly twice a day and for a few days after the skin improves as current thinking is that this is better then just repeated now and again usage.
