Peanut Allergy - What about Humous?

BernieBear · 26/07/2006 17:21

My ds (2.4) has a peanut allergy for which I have epipens. Today he was desperate to try humous, but am unsure as to the relationship between peanuts vs. chick peas and sesame? (He is so angry at not being able to try it he has just chucked it across the room [shocked] I have smeared some on his skin and so far ok. But was wondering if anyone else had any information for me?

I think there is some relationship to sesame and peanuts

tealady · 26/07/2006 17:26

My ds (9) has a peanut allergy (an epi-pens) but eats hoummus without any problems.

JennT · 26/07/2006 17:27

Think sesame is quite allergenic I'm afraid. Make your own without tahini, it's dead easy, but no where near as smooth I'm afraid.

bluebear · 26/07/2006 17:41

My ds has a sesame allergy, and we have been told by his allergy therapist to keep him from all nuts and seeds until he has some testing later this month....he was actually tested for peanut last year and was negative, but there is meant to be some association between some nuts and sesame (not sure about chickpea)..I've tried searching to find which nuts but unsuccessfully.

mell2 · 26/07/2006 19:47

my ds has nut allergies. He did have a tiny bit of hummous and his lips started itching.

Still not sure if he reacted to the sesame or chickpea.

roisin · 26/07/2006 19:50

Dh has an allergy to peanuts and almonds, and some other nuts. He is not allergic to sesame, but he doesn't like it: it makes him feel sick - presumably his body reacting to the fact that it "tastes nutty".

BernieBear · 26/07/2006 20:05

Rrrrright. So it's 50/50 really. Oh dear. His skin didn't react. Oh dear it is a tough one. The problem is as he is also allergic to dairy and egg, food can be a little limited, so was hoping that something as healthy as hummous would be a fair option. Maybe I will speak to his doctor/nurse and see what they suggest.

He had been going through a fussy stage with food but has just started getting interested in fresh fruit etc. and is obviously showing an interest in other areas. It is a tough one isn't it!

Thanks for your welcome replies.

peanuts are legummes,so are in closer in relation to beans( that includes chick pea. My son has grown out of his tree nut allergies, but his peanut and bean allergy is life long.
5% of peanut allergic are allergic to beans.

Chandra · 26/07/2006 23:06

DS has peanut allergy and was for some time sensitive to sesame. He seems to have outgrown the sesame sensitivity but I wouldn't let him near humous, too desne in seed content to risk it (he has also reacted to beans and is very allergic to soya, so better to err on the side of caution).

Chandra · 26/07/2006 23:07

desne= dense!

Hi - my DS is allergic to dairy, eggs and sesame and we were told to avoid all nuts for the time being even though he tested negative to them. He will be tested again in a years time when he'll be two.

BernieBear · 28/07/2006 10:34

Hi Wicker how are you going with the dairy and egg avoidence? Frustrating at times isn't it!

Hi Berniebear. Yeh it can be difficult at times - find myself doing quite a bit of baking!! But at the mo, my DS is still too young to realise that he isn't eating the same as everyone else but I can image it gets more difficult as they get older!!

Did you decide to try the humous?

xx

one of my kids has severe nut allergy but is fine with sesame - although sesame allergy is a bit more common in the nut allergic. Remember its the second taste that produces the reaction.

You could try a bit on the skin of the face then if there's still no reaction a tiny smear on the lip. If that's Ok you can let him have a lick and if he's still Ok about 30 minutes later let him eat a bit. Or you could wait and ask for some skin prick tests next time he's tested - I assume he's having repeat tests sometime to see if he's one of the lucky ones outgrowing his allergy.

My son was allergic to seseme seeds before he became allergic to treenuts and peanuts. He is also allergic to sunflower seeds so I don't give him any seeds.

My daughter has severe allergy to all nuts inc coconut but not sesame.

We saw consultant immunologist who did various IgE blood tests and she came out clear for chickpea - it's really an individual thing, there is no clear pattern.

I always say "if in doubt, don't eat it - better to be hungry than end up in hospital!"

Get a referral for blood tests at least that way you will be sure, I've lived with this damn thing for 12 years now!
