8mo egg allergy

BooBudolphMeowson · 30/12/2013 23:56

My 8mo has come up in hives after eating egg. His face seemed ok, but his torso and neck rashed up.

Do I need to take him to the GP? Or can I just avoid eggs from now on? I wasn't intending on avoiding food with small amounts of cooked eggs mixed in, but I wasn't going to give him pancakes etc any time soon. Is that the right thing to do?

He's eaten a lot of pasta etc previously.

If you want to check for certain that it's eggs that have given him the rash you can put some raw egg on a graze or cut in his skin if he has one somewhere on his body. If he's allergic the cm of skin around the graze will go red. Then you'll know for certain it was the egg.

Thanks, I'm about 95% positive it was eggs and didn't want to risk any more exposure.

Problem is I don't want to cut them out of his diet completely so im not sure what to do

Personally I would take him to the doctor. Allergies can get worse over time and the next reaction might be more severe. At least you can get the egg allergy confirmed and be prescribed an antihistamine to manage any further reactions.

Take him to the GP and demand a referral to an allergy specialist for testing. Allergies tend to get worse with every exposure and egg allergy can become anaphylactic in some cases.

Please don't try a home allergy test. As another poster said the reactions can worsen. You really need to get to gp and ask for referral for allergy testing. In the meantime I would avoid egg. Your gp should give you piriton suitable for an infant that you can have on hand just I case.

I had similar with DS the first time he had scrambled egg (about the same age) - his face and hands came up in a rash, but no swelling or breathing problems. I took him to the GP who just told me not to give him eggs again.

He was fine with things like cakes or egg pasta. He outgrew it by about 2 but still doesn't like eggs.

Just want to stress what's already been said. Take him to your GP and ask to be referred, from personal experience it may take several trips to the GP before they take you seriously. If your LO has another similar reaction make sure you take a photo of it and show it to the Dr.
We only managed to see a specialist after DS had an anaphylactic reaction to cashew nuts when he was 18 months old.
With egg it's quite common to be allergic to egg if it's not baked or cooked very well as the proteins change a lot during cooking. DS can tolerate egg in pasta/ cakes/ biscuits etc but not on it's own.
I hope you manage to get an appointment soon.

We found out Ds2 had an egg allergy at 8m same symptoms after eating scrambled eggs. GP referred him to allergy clinic at local hospital they did a batch of RAST tests which showed he was allergic to to egg white but not egg yolk. They also found he was mildly allergic to peanuts. We were prescribed an Antihistamine if he had another reaction. Ds2 was fine with cooked and pasteurised eggs in cakes, pasta and biscuits thank god
But not in meringues. He grew out of his allergies by the time he was 3. I'd agree you need to see your GP as your ds2 may need an epipen if his Allergy is severe and also you need proper dietary advice from a dietitian as so many things contain egg and his diet may become too limited. Nurseries also need to know what to do if your ds has a reaction.
