allergy to milk protein

I'm writing this message on behalf of a friend. She has a dd who is 13months old and has an allergy to milk protein. In this case she is unable to eat cheese and fromage frais aswell. The child is breast-fed and is still on 3 breast feeds a day. Obviously her mother wants to start to wean her off the breast. She has been prescribed nutramegen by the doctor but will not drink it nor consume it with porridge/cereal. She will drink a maximum of 2oz rice milk per day but that's it. How can she consume enough calcium?
Is anyone else in the same position or do any of you know of a friend who has had these problems. Please write back with any ideas/suggestions as my friend is getting extremely worried.
Thanks

Sammyj, re the calcium, you can get a calcium supplement called Sandoz (? I forget the exact name). But she should also realize that milk and formula are high in calories and fat, which babies desperately need.

She might try mixing a bit of Nutramigen in with expressed breast milk, then increasing the proportions. My son was allergic to milk, but like Podmog, I breastfed until 2 years. Even with that, he went through a period of losing weight and I added extra fat (olive oil) to his food. Not the ideal solution, admittedly, but it worked. Good luck to your friend!

All the other suggestions are really good. I don't think it's "obvious" that you would want to wean a milk allergic child off the breast. I breastfeed my 12mo ds as there is no alternative I am as happy with. If your friend (or you) wants to contact me offline, feel free to use the contact button.

Thank you all for coming back to me on this. I think that she has also tried goats' milk but it also made her ill. I will forward your replies to her and see what she says - thanks again.

both my boys are dairy allergic. we use Infosoy power from the chemist. ours is prescribed by a dietician so is free, but it costs around £5 a tin for 500g. we also use vegtable marg in replacement of butter and a whole range of products listed in store allergy books. you can request these from customer service desks. they take a week or so to arrive.they are both healthy happy and full of beans!
