Kiwi allergy? Is this likely?

DS has egg allergy. Came home last month with allergy. Nursery manager and chef swore blind no egg used all day in kitchen and DS didn't have contact with anyone else that day. I believe them 100%. However, DS ate kiwi within the time frame for allergy to come out. Had eaten it once as a babe. No reaction. Anyone ever heard of an allergy to kiwis? Desperate to resolve this as am sure it wasn't egg and can't bear the thought of having something else unknown to contend with.... Can anyone help?

yes, kiwi allergy is quite qwell known.

beckybrastraps · 20/07/2006 16:40

'Fraid so.

chubbleigh · 20/07/2006 16:47

Yes, heard of several people with that allergy.

EmmyLou · 20/07/2006 17:02

didn't Ross have this in an old episode of Friends???

singersgirl · 20/07/2006 20:32

Have a good friend who developed severe kiwi allergy over the last couple of years. I've heard it's on the increase. I think kiwis are somehow related to bananas (latex maybe?). Threebob might know.

LeahE · 20/07/2006 20:36

Yes, kiwi allergy's quite common and hence it's one of the foods guidelines suggest introducing late-ish and delaying further if there's a history of allergies.

FrannyandZooey · 20/07/2006 20:41

Yup, apparently some allergy experts are recommending banning kiwis from nurseries and groups, in the same way that nuts are, because it can be so severe and serious, as with nuts.

I've asked people not to bring them to my groups - we have one young girl who's very allergic to kiwis amongst other things.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 20/07/2006 20:46

yep - we have a fruit bowl at school nursery that parents contribute to and we're not allowed to bring kiwis in as one girl has severe kiwi allergy

zephyrcat · 20/07/2006 20:47

What kind of reaction did he have to it? I have developed an allergy to kiwi's via my allergy to apples and other similar fruits...

nixnoo · 21/07/2006 05:05

I am allergic to Kiwis. Not allergic to any other foods.
Apparently it is a weird allergy that gets exponentially worse (and is on the increase). I had eaten it a few times before I had the reaction. Previously my mouth had tingled and then the next time my lips swelled, throast cllosed etc. Doctor said to not even eat anything kiwi had touched in future.

The good news is that it is easily avoided.

zephyrcat · 21/07/2006 09:25

That's the same reaction as I have to apples, pears, peaches etc nixnoo.

I wonder if kiwis are farmed in this country and use a 'standard' pesticide (this is what I've been trying to find out about apples etc as I can drink apple juice etc just not eat the fresh fruit)

SSSandy · 21/07/2006 09:41

Yes, dd won't touch them - and she's right, comes up in a rash

PandaG · 21/07/2006 09:43

I react similarly to nixnoo - I am nut allergic too. I can eat a fruit salad that has had kiwi in, and just pick out hte kiwi with no ill effect though!

lucy5 · 21/07/2006 09:52

My friend's dd is multi allergic including egg and she has a book with related foods in. Her ds is allergic to strawberries and somehow kiwi is related, this eventually explained an unexplainable allergic reaction.

NotAnOtter · 21/07/2006 10:00

my ds1 is only allergic to kiwis nothing else!

SofiaAmes · 22/07/2006 06:51

Very common. Also related to strawberries, as I think someone else mentioned. Also, be careful because people who are allergic to kiwi's can be so allergic that they can't even touch one without a reaction.
It could be worse...kiwi's are fairly easily avoidable.
By the way, have you had your ds tested recently for the egg allergy. it can be outgrown. My dd had allergic reaction to either egg or antibiotics as a baby (had both at same time and not sure which gave her the hives). However, she has had both many times since (we tried again after 12 months) and has had no reaction at all.

fruit allergies often go in hand with tree pollen allergies.
its that cross reactive protein thingy going on.
I am sure that oral allergy sufferers are worse during the tree pollen season if they are allergic to pollen.
Sort of allergen over load. apples are a common allergy.
kiwi is on the rise, and there has only been one in depth study of kiwi this was carried out at southampton.
Apparently repeated exposure to kiwi can result in swifter , severe reactions. Which is not usually the norm for most food allergies.
There is a cross reaction at times to other fruits ( bannana) and latex. But allergies are indivudual and certainly my son is allergic to kiwi, but has no other fruit allergies and is not latex allergic.
The only areas to double check re avoidance of kiwi is fresh fruit salad, yogurts and ice creams and ice lollys.
fairly easy to avoid.
We have been told that our son may grow out of his kiwi allergy, but this again has little research that I know of in this area. This is still a newish allergy,( compared to the research done on peanut for e.g) it would be nice to have to cross another allergy off the list. But kiwi has such a small impact on his life when compared to his other allergies.

Wow! Thank you one and all! Guess we'll check with our allergy specialist, next visit! Allergy to egg was initially severe (throat and tongue swelled up, etc) but went for an egg challenge a month or so ago and reaction had gone down to just swollen and blood-shot eyes. This is exactly what happened with the suspected kiwi incident. Who knows? As you all say, it's easily avoidable, just like the egg, so we'll wait and see. Thanks for all the responses! Jos1
