Nutramigen preparation

My 6 week old son has been out on nutramigen today after a whole pile of symptoms pointing to a cows milk protein allergy.

So far we've had 3 feeds in comfort thank god. He had been on hipp prior to this so when we went out I took their pre made cartons. How do I go about taking feeds for him now tho? I don't see any nutramigen pre made for sale in the uk that aren't massively expensive!

Thanks for that I'm sure we can manage with a thermos of hot water but just wasn't sure if there was an easier way.

We're only on the 4th feed of this so will have to see how things go.

We did the thermos and a powder dispenser thing. Always wondered why it wasn't available as premade .... Wink

mamicar · 17/12/2013 20:53

we used to fill bottle up an ounce less. so 3oz and then take a bottle of boiling hot water and add the last ounce and milk from a dispenser.

though by the time their bottles are full 8 ounces it was filled to 6oz and then added 2 of hot water Smile

Wow - so pleased for u that u got sorted at 6wks, at 16wks & 3 doctors later we have only just had the test for lactose intolerance! Now awaiting results.
And double wow at the super quick difference the nutramigen has made! Bet that's such a relief for u. Enjoy your new baby ;-) I hope we get the same result.

SusanaD · 18/12/2013 17:26

we take a thermos, a small bottle of cool water and a milk powder dispenser. Nutramigen has to be made in hot water, then I cool down the feed by topping it with cool water- feed ready.

PurpleDana · 18/12/2013 19:03

Is there any reason nutramigen can't be made in advance?

mamicar · 18/12/2013 23:29

the powder seperates and doesn't mix properly if made in advance n left to settle. doesn't mix properly if water is hot enough either.

ds didn't settle on nutramigen n ended up on neocate.

he's 3 in 4 weeks now n although doesn't drink milk. he does have dairy in small amounts. they should grow out of it Smile

PurpleDana · 19/12/2013 15:51

To be fair, expressed breastmilk also seperates but it is still fine to use after a bit of a shake/stir. Is nutramigen genuinely spoiled if prepared in advance? Is it that different?
Tins will always tell u to prepare bottles fresh as and when needed, it's the ideal way but not always practical. I believe parents need realistic advice in various ways to prepare feeds, not just the ideal.

I make up bottles of nutrimegen and they can be kept in the fridge for 24 hours, just grab when needed.

Have you found Cows Milk Protein Support on the web or on facebook? They are a wonderful resource.

Sorry for taking so long to come back - been having an utter nightmare.

He's got silent reflux so we tried gaviscon. He screamed like nothing I've ever heard before. So we got ranitidine and had another shocking night of screaming. Saw the Gp again today and he gave him carobel and told me to prop him up to sleep. No idea how to do this safely.

He's knackered from being up half the night that I've only managed to get 60mls in him before he's passed out.

I'm losing the ability to cope...
