7 week old reflux / lactose intolerant?

Hello all
Further to my earlier posts asking for help with my little ones feeding, we now think she has reflux (having done the usual Internet searches) or lactose intolerance. Referred to paediatrician for jaundice at 5 weeks. Paediatrician said he wasnt concerned about jaundice but on discussion about feeding thinks she may have lactose intolerance though was reluctant to diagnose. She is breasted & after each feed regurgitates a lot of the milk & later vomits it up over a 2-3 hr period. There is a lot of sick (could fill my palm) & we get through 4 bibs & 2 changes of clothes each feed. This is accompanied by screaming, crying, back arching, rigid torso, etc. very distressing following feed. Quite a lot of wind too. Apparent pain comes on quickly without warning. Recently (6-7 weeks) poo become liquidy with explosive nappies. Has never liked lying on back, settles better on side. Difficult to get to sleep unless in pram or car seat and moving or if she's being held. Reflux advice I found was to keep her upright for 2-3 hrs post feed...impossible at night!! So I decided to cut out dairy from my diet 3 days ago To see what happened & all symptoms have gone! Seems too good to be true. Wondered if others have experienced similar & what you did. I think I probably ought to discuss with Gp too??

it wouldnt be lactose intolerance if she improved with cutting out dairy as breastmilk is choc full of lactose (it is the sugar in all milks). If you think the improvement is related to cutting out dairy products then it sounds like a problem with cows milk protein not lactose.

Sounds like cows milk protein allergy - v similar to both my daughters' experiences. Did you combination feed? Only small amounts of cmp get through in breast milk so babies are unlikely to react unless they have been exposed to a stronger source (ie formula) and then become more sensitive. V common for reflux to be caused by underlying dairy allergy too. Maybe ask health visitor or Gp for referral to dietician but good idea to keep a diary for a while and see what works long term - you will probably be your own best source of help in my experience!

Auntierosemary: I just breast fed. Good idea about dietician referral thanks.

Vast improvement in my baby since I been dairy free for 2 weeks. No pain or crying post feed & settles well (even on her back) post feed! still lots of reflux (brininging up half the feed whikst still lying down feeding & for half hour post feed)which Gp has just prescribed infant gaviscon. Anyone else had success with this? We keep baby horizontal post feed to try to minimise amount of milk brought back up.

We are on infant gaviscon with our 17wk old dd. Tbh it hasn't lessened the reflux, just the accompanying pain (which is a great relief itself tho). Although the sick is thicker so easier to clean up! She is tending to hold small amounts in her mouth now, chew it & swallow it back down. Horrible to think she is having to do that.
Now awaiting test results for lactose intolerance as she also has horrendous eczema as well as the other usual symptoms
