Questions about siblings of kids with food allergies

I have ds1 who is 3.5 and allergic to peanuts, chickpeas, all nuts and seeds. Not ever had anaphylactic reactions but we've been advised to carry epi pen as he has had some nasty reactions and pinprick testing shows up strong reactions.

I also have ds2 who is 8 months. No signs of allergies in him but I have some questions:

Have you found younger siblings to be allergic to same foods as older child? Or other kinds of allergies? (there's no real allergy family history here)

And would you give younger sibling the foods the older one is allergic to? Obviously no nuts for a baby but I'm excluding things like hummus due to chickpeas. Would you have them tested for allergies?

Thanks

I have four children, my 3rd was born with allergies iyswim. The fourth baby showed none of the signs of food allergy, as did my first two.
I didnt have her tested as she didnt have eczema, and slept within normal patterns and gained weight and appeared well.
Had no food allergies during her early childhood, however that has changed in teen years, but we DO have allergies in extended family history.

Our older children did eat some foods that were on our allergic child's allergy list, but rules were put in place to stop cross contamination.
However some foods have been and still are banned as harder to control and allergy very high.

My DS2 has nut, seed, dairy and egg allergies but DS1 and DD (the youngest) seem pretty allergy free (I say pretty as they do have a bit of eczema but I think that is environmental).

With DD I was cautious when introducing foods but as she seemed to have no reaction to dairy or nuts then I have relaxed.

6 YO was allergic to cows milk protein and grew out if it by 4. 2 YO showed signs of atopic tendencies and reacted to egg on skin contact so we take her along to the paediatric allergist now. Prior to reaction I weaned carefully but didn't test her. Allergies now include egg, lentils and raspberries (so are different to first DS - I think this is a common experience). We have all her allergens in the house, but due to stickiness / risk of cross contamination tend to give
my DS eggs only when she's out so I can clean up - he's too little not to make a big mess while eating too. That said, before we knew she wasn't anaphylactic we didn't have eggs in the house... but I took my DS out for dippy eggs and pancakes every now and again as he missed them. Guess as with all these things it's a question of constantly looking at the risks and making your own decisions as time goes on depending on the individual variables in your family.

Just to give you a different perspective, I am late-30's and grew up with a sibling with food allergies.

I am completely fine, have had tests and my DCs have been tested too, they are also fine.

Have 6 children

Dd1 is sensitive to food additives which trigger her asthma and eczema
Dd2 is allergic to apples and carrots (oral allergy syndrome)
Dd4 anaphylactic to milk, eggs and peanut.

Dd3, ds and dd5 are all fine.

misdee · 11/01/2014 08:05

Sorry, sidetracked by kids.

The others all eat wat dd4 is allergic to, apart from peanuts as they don't like them in any form.

I have four children. DD 13, DS1 9, DS2 3 and DS3 21 months.
Ds2 is allergic to Peanuts on contact and ingestion but we have been told to avoid all nuts and nut traces until he is tested again. He also probably has asthma but like Miow they have said he is too young to confirm. He gets very dry skin and rashes easily too.

My other three DC are so far fine. They are allowed to eat things that may contain nut traces and products containing other nuts. None of us has peanuts or anything containing peanuts. DD is allowed peanut butter and her beloved Peanut KitKat chunky's at GP's house if DS2 isn't present. I feel I need to give DC4 peanuts just to see if he is allergic but after DS2's reaction I am a bit scared.

DS has multiple allergies to milk, eggs, nuts, chickpeas and lentils. I asked for advice on weaning DD and they tested her for allergies at 6 months old, she is only allergic to eggs.

We don't really eat nuts in the house, but apart from that the rest of us eat all the other things DS is allergic to.

Pollydon · 11/01/2014 17:53

My ds has severe peanut allergy (anaphylaxis) , we were advised that dd had no greater chance of developing an allergy than any other child
A result of a nut free environment meant that she was not exposed until reception class & she is allergy free.

EducatingNora · 15/01/2014 20:38

Dc3 has severe peanut allergy. Dc2 is allergic to penicillin and I think probably was intolerant to dairy as a baby. Dc1 is absolutely fine.

Should also have mentioned that we have lots of allergies in the family. I have two nephews who are allergic to nuts, a cousin who is allergic to chocolate (!), another cousin who is allergic to peanuts and wine and my granny had weird reactions to ber stings. There is definitely a dodgy gene lurking.
