ds breastfed and allergic to cows milk.. what can we eat?

Ds has had an obvious reaction to milk and were waiting for docs app to verify exactly whats causing the allergy so I thought I had better eliminate cow's milk and the proteins from my own diet just to be safe.
What can't we eat? Can I still have bread?
I know the obvious..
Cheese
Yogs
Ice cream
Butter
Chocolate
Can I have cake? Biscuits?
Won't be able to get to see a doc until Monday so just panicking about what I'll actually eat until then.

Most bread will have v little milk in it if any, but we are dairy free and have 50/50 or Best of Both.

If you really need to avoid all dairy, then most cake is ruled out, but if you're desperate look in free from aisle, or bake your own using olive oil or dairy free spread.
Chocolate: look for dark choc 70%cocoa plus but check ingredients too.
Biscuits: ginger nuts are your best bet
Soya yogurts
Soya ice cream - "Swedish glace" brand available in most supermarkets

As for meals, lots of processed stuff usually ok, eg fish fingers, chips, sausages, baked beans, but again check label

Maybe go for a roast tmw, and use sunflower or olive oil instead of butter for spuds and veg? Also check stock cube or gravy granule labels as that's the kind of thing that can catch you out.

Most muesli is ok, as are Cheerios, weetabix, rice crispies, porridge oats, but obv use soya/oat/coconut/rice/almond milk instead of dairy

Hope that gives you a few shortcuts to make it through til Monday, but u probably won't have to be that careful. Good luck!

Thanks so much that's really helped a lot! Will take abit of getting used to but I had planned to feed ds until he is Atleast 2 and a milk allergy won't be stopping me!

Good for you. Does take a bit of getting used to but you'll find it dead easy soon enough.
Couple of other tips that I wish someone had told me:

  1. If ds ends up on a dairy free diet, make sure he eats lots of fat from other sources - toddlers need 40% fat in diet and can get toddler diarrhoea quite easily without dairy, esp if you substitute snacks for fruit/veg too much as well
  2. Substitute dairy milk with oat or coconut milk rather than soya - proteins in soya are similar and people allergic to one more likely to be allergic to other too. Plus too much soya give you wind!

You'll have to give up soya too as you can also be allergic to soya if you have a milk allergy, and the same with goats
milk.

Yeah, I had read that about soya, I never realised how many foods contain milk until now!

You don't need to avoid all soya - most soya as an ingredient is not soya protein so maybe just stay away from soya butter/yoghurt/milk. Things that contain "soya lecithin" should be fine.

Following... just tried 25w DS with baby porridge and blotchy rash all over face. Guessing dairy most likely culprit. Same reaction to bananas. Sad

ditsy have you been told that you should cut it out of your own diet?

if he hasn't reacted to your milk thus far then there is no reason why he would suddenly start to, tbh, and you don't need to cut it out.

some babies DO react to proteins passed through in breast milk, but you would have seen symptoms of that already. anecdotally I've seen this more often in children with an intolerance rather than an allergy.
it takes up to 2 weeks for dairy to clear from your system, so honestly, if he isn't reacting to it then don't be hasty in cutting it out Grin

Bund - that's true, but what often happens is that babies tolerate the proteins in bm but once they've been exposed to them directly in their own food or milk they become very sensitive to them and restart to react, even when they hadn't before. Happened to both of mine. Cutting dairy from mums diet won't do any harm as long as she makes sure she gets plenty of calcium and fat from other sources.
