Aveeno - can't remember who I have to thank.....

I know someone mentioned Aveeno cream in an excema thread recently and I'd just like to say a big thankyou to whoever that was! dd4 (22 months) has had terrible red sore flaky excema patches all over her torso and limbs for about three months and if anything, Diprobase from the GP was making it worse. I saw Aveeno in Boots on Tuesday, started appplying it, and by this morning all redness had disappeared, and the skin was much much softer. I honestly couldn't believe my eyes, so thankyou, whoever mentioned it>

Excema? Ezcema? Eczema? I give up...

oooooh, I have just done a thread moaning about excema (which, I might add, noone apart from Jimjams has posted on ) might investigate this cream.

Is it expensive? I have used something called Allergenics from Boots but that wasn't any good.

oh im pleased the aveeno worked for, lots of us reccommended it,they also do a bath product.

princesspeahead · 26/02/2004 15:57

could have been me, I have been super-evangelical since I discovered it.... but that was in large part due to sunchowder, I admit!

happy to take the credit though, he he he he

Northerner · 26/02/2004 16:00

Yes it was you PPh and I've been meaning to tahnk you also. My ds (22 months) gets exzema on his arms, legs and under his chin and since using Aveeno I have noticed a HUGE difference. Still gets the odd flare up but all in all Aveeno keeps it calm. Just started using the bath oil too, and he comes out all soft and shiny!

BTW I asked my GP to describe it as it's bloody expensive!

Thank You, Thank You and Thank You again it is a wonderous cream!

melsy · 26/02/2004 16:27

Oh I must go and see the doctor about this next week. I have used oilatum/aqeous/ hydraqourtisone(sp?), as soon as i stop it all comes back allover her cheeks and forhead. She hten scratches and scratches and cuts it so it looks even worse. Is this a diff type of emolient???

princesspeahead · 26/02/2004 19:18

delighted to hear it northerner, isn't it a relief to find it?

oh melsy, do try it. my ds couldn't tolerate aqueous cream, diprobase, etc etc and the aveeno is great. it is oat-based, made by J&J surprisingly, and you can buy it without prescription from boots (although as mentioned, it is expensive). it is great stuff. as you can tell from this thread!

by the way, what we pay £6.60 for in the UK is about $3 in the states, so if you know anyone going there it is worth asking them to pick some up for you, it is in every drugstore...

Gilli · 26/02/2004 19:26

Well thank you all - I am now super evangelical too! Great news about the bath product -will get it asap. Also glad to hear that I'm not the only one with a dd made worse by aquaeous cream, diprobase, etc.

princesspeahead · 26/02/2004 19:39

by the way gilli, you can get aveeno LOTION (not cream) in a much bigger tub which is more economical... but I havent found it to be as good. it just isn't as thick and moisturising as the cream. thought I'd mention it in case you fell over it in boots.
bath stuff great though. and I've gone down to bathing him only once a week (gets a thorough flannel wash the other days) and I've found that helps a lot too - I think because our water is so ridiculously hard.

CountessDracula · 26/02/2004 19:42

I've bought a tube tonight and await the morning eagerly - looking forward to my flawless china skinned baby!

BearintheBigBlueHous · 26/02/2004 22:48

Likewise, thanks PPH et al, DD's flare ups are now well under control and DS's sandpaper skin is now much smoother thanks to lotion twice daily and cream for the worst bits. The allantoin in it is also helping calm the appearance of DD's horrendous c'pox scars on her tummy. BTW our doc denied that he could prescribe it, so we're shelling out, but it's worth it. I guess that's what Boots Advantage points are for...

SofiaAmes · 26/02/2004 23:51

Hmm, I'm sure the bath stuff is what my doctor in the states told me to use for my piles. I've been having great luck with Eucerin (American cream, does it exist over here) and my dd's excema.

bobthebaby · 27/02/2004 07:28

PPH, I have you to thank for the oats in muslin I believe. That has made a huge difference to my ds's skin. And it's so cheap!

CountessDracula · 27/02/2004 09:22

Oats in Muslin bobthebaby?

princesspeahead · 27/02/2004 10:31

you're welcome, bob, bitbbh et al (preen preen)

big handful of oats, bung in middle of a muslin, bind up with an elastic band, run the bath through it sort of squeezing it to get the oaty gunk out, and also use it to wash baby, squeezing said gunk on skin and rubbing in.
softens the water, soothes the eczema, helps to heal the skin (all that vit e and whatever lovely things are in oats). then slap on tons of aveeno and bobthebaby's your uncle!
organic oats work appreciably better than non organic ones.

CountessDracula · 27/02/2004 10:39

Am off to oat shop now!

Dd's skin on her face did look a bit better this morning - could it be working already?

CountessDracula · 27/02/2004 10:40

PPH when you say oats do you mean the ones you make porridge from? Or is there another sort?

princesspeahead · 27/02/2004 10:42

yup, porridge oats. I use jumbo rolled organic ones but sainsbury's taste the difference are also fine...!

jumbo ones leave a bit less detritus in the bath than the smaller more dusty ones

CountessDracula · 04/03/2004 19:49

Well an update, been using Aveeno for a week now and the difference is quite amazing. At playgroup today apparantly several people commented on how improved her skin on her face is! She really doesn't look like she has eczema at all now.

Thanks Sunchowder, PPH and Gilli for bringing this to my attention.

bossykate · 04/03/2004 20:23

think i will try it as am covered in highly unattractive, itchy rash due to pg.

princesspeahead · 04/03/2004 21:12

hurrah!
three cheers for aveeno!

suzywong · 04/03/2004 21:13

OH god yes three rousing cheers!
We started it yesterday and it has cleared up 75% of the dry bumpy patches on DS1 and sorted out baby DS2's flaky scalp first go.
It is truly a wonder

SofiaAmes · 04/03/2004 21:21

hey, bossykate, i too had that rash, and now that you mention it, i remember my us doctor suggesting Aveeno for it. I never tried it, but my us gp is very good on things like that. I used Rose's Prickly Heat Powder which my parents bought in hong kong for me. It was the only thing that seemed to make a difference.

sunchowder · 04/03/2004 21:25

I recommended Aveeno Oatmeal bath!! Thanks for mentioning me Princess Pea, I am feeling rather left out lately ...missing everyone too!
