Hi,my ds(3yrs.)has severe allergy to milk & dairy & also to wheat, nuts egg, peanuts. He has had since 3wks.old.I also have dd(15mths)& she has no allergies so far at all much to our amazement. The thing I am wondering about is that since dd went on to ord. formula milk & solids,if my son comes into contact with her, ie. through play, goodnight kiss, handholding etc.,cos of his allergies he will get urticaerial lumps on him where he has come into contact with her.We realise this will get better as she learns to eat better & drink better herself as she gets older, but obviously dd is so sensitive skin contact with allergen gives rash.(He will get 2 or 3 lumps even after dd has had hands & face wiped)I am not worried about this (well not as much as I used to !)but am just curious as to wether anyone else out there has experience of this re allergic dd or ds?When we mentioned it to consultant & dietician at ds's last clinic appt.they seemed surprised that he could get lumps appearing just from coming into skin contact with slight trace of allergen!Sorry this is a bit longwinded, hope it makes some sort of sense.

HI ronyag,My ds 17mos has a severe nut and egg allergy .He too reacts from touching someone who has a trace of allergen on their skin.To dat he has never actually eaten or touched any nuta or eggs ,we only suspected the allergy through secoond hand contact if you know what I mean.
His allergy has been confirmed recently through skin prick tests.
He is also allergic too our dog and gets hives if any dog saliva touches his skin, even if it's via my skin.
I have also had surprised reactions from my gp but the allergy specialist at southampton didn't seem too surprised and seemed to say it was a sign of a severe allergy.

Ronyag, that happened to my son (years ago) a number of times. He was also allergic to dairy.

I know you probably know this but... be very careful about spilling little bits of dairy containing food on the floor, even if you wipe it up. My son had a serious reaction to a tiny amount of cheese (we think) once. It happened when he was crawling and he must have put his hand in it then put his hand to his mouth.

Good luck with it all.

Ronyag - My contact dermititus isn't triggered by the allergen touching my skin, it's triggered if I eat the allergen (tomatoes) and then touch anything. It's weird, my scalp will swell if I brush my hair a few hours after eating tomatoes. My ds doesn't have this, but I do since I was 17. If I run in my bare feet the soles of them go red and lumpy for a while..... so I don't think washing your DD's hands make any difference at all. The only thing that stops my reaction is to either completely avoid the food or take an antihistamine.
If you are avoiding all the things that your DS has been found to be allergic to, yet he still gets this reaction I'm afraid it sounds like he may have developed an intolerance to something that he still consumes. An intolerance isn't as severe as an allergy and he will most likely grow out of some of them. Allergies and food intolerance are still a bit of a medical mystery!

DD2 has contact allergics, she get red hives and it itches. She has to have Priton. I know she is allergic to red colourings, which is a nightmare.

Hello,Thanks for all these bits of advice. All the scenarios you are describing are very familiar one way or another. Its comforting to know that there are other families out there experiencing or have experienced similar situations regarding ddords's allergies. We have been assured by various "experts" that ds wouldn't have anaphylactic reaction from contact with allergen, only through swallowing it,but we never take chance with anybody/anything regarding this theory & always err on side of caution.Btw Podmog I kwym re spills etc we had a few scary times with ds when he was learning to crawl -huge red hives on legs arms etc. Also, Robinw, can relate totally to what u are saying re poolcue & trying to figure out what caused reaction, this is same for us at times.Anyway ,thanks for messages
