Weaning issues

Just started weaning last week. Having lots of issues.

Started with carrot and sweet potato, then added in potato. on the 5th day i added butternut squash. That night - baby screamed for hours would then sleep for 15 to 30 minutes then screaming started again. In morning dirty nappy with lots of undigested food in it. Spoke to HV who recommended avoiding butternut squash. So continued with 3 first foods, every night since she has continued to scream and be extremely windy and fill her nappy with undigested food.
For last 2 days we have avoided food and EBF baby still screaming most of night and on times through day. Nappies are now watery consistency with some clear mucus too. Today she has had 6 dirty nappies.

Saw a doctor who asked why i had decided to start weaning was it because I no longer wanted to BF :S
I explained it was because baby is 6months now but I planned to continue BF too.
He thought bowel may not be ready for food yet so to wait.

I asked could it be a bug - he thought no as prob linked to introduction of foods.

I asked if it could be an allergy or bowel problem - he said too early to say as she would need to lose weight or be more ill before they would look into that.

I said i was concerned about the constant screaming - he didn't give any advice to this

I asked about risk of dehydration and he said it is extremely hard to dehydrate.

So just wondering on others experiences - does it sound like allergies or intolerance to food?

I am now waiting till nappies return to normal before trying any other food but I am concerned about trying food again due to how much pain it has caused her.

As long as you continue to bf, I agree that its highly unlikely that she will dehydrate. Also think it may be too early to tell. If you are offering solids just once a day, agree that its a good idea to go back to ebfing for a while and it won't hurt her to do that. Also agree that it just could be that her bowel is a little immature. When they first wean, its normal to have lots of up digested food in the nappies. Butternut squash can be constipating and she may just not like the sensation of the food moving through her.

How is she if you have butternut squash?

Thank you

I've never eaten butternut squash - so not sure - the other foods I do eat regularly tho.

Do you think leave it a week and then try some food again to see what happens.

Just glad I didn't try weaning early like everyone kept telling me to do

Yes, I'd leave it at least a week. There's no rush. Weaning is more about trying new tastes and textures, learning to handle things like cups and learning to eat as part of the family rather than an exercise is seeing how much you can cram into them Smile.

There is some good weaning advice on kellymom including Why delay solids?, so how do we get started with solids? and food intolerances in the bf baby.

The NHS recommend moving to 3 meals a day between 8 and 9 months so you've got plenty of time.

Hope you all have a better night tonight Smile

Thank you -
Much better night - screaming fit at 11 but cuddles and feed and settled quicker than other nights, woke at 2am and 3 am then through till 6am had a feed and then slept till 9.30 am woke up happy

Seams a lot better in herself too.
