Confused about egg allergy and vaccination stablizers

In the skin prick test my 3 yo DS result for the past two years to raw egg has been 17mm (he also reacts with 6mm to sesame and has eczema).
He had an immediate skin reaction to the second dose of MMR.

He had a severe skin rash after his first set of immunisations as a baby that took three months to clear.
We have an epipen but have never had to use it.

We have his yearly appointment with the consultant next month and I was wondering what questions would be useful to ask.

He can eat baked egg products and did not react to real icecream or royal icing which you would think he would given his test results.

Should we be testing for other allergens to try and improve his eczema?
Should we test for gelatin?
Avoid flu jab?
Why the inconsistency with egg products?

Thanks!

I don't think there is thought to be enough egg in the MMR to trigger an allergic reaction because it is actually grown in chicken cells inside the egg. If your DS had a reaction to the MMR is may well be an allergy to something else, not egg.

Sounds similar to my DS. He's allergic to egg and came out in hives after 2nd MMR but recently passed a baked egg challenge even though his blood test result for egg was still very high. It's very common to be able to tolerate baked egg but still react to cooked or raw egg. My DS is also allergic to milk wheat and nuts so we obviously avoid all of those but he still has eczema. Sadly in most cases there is no magic cure for eczema. Have you seen a dermatologist? If not then I would definitely push for a referral.

It's very surprising that he doesn't react to royal icing. It's possible he has had a false positive skin prick, or possible he's only allergic to egg yolk and not the white. Has he ever had a reaction to egg in anything?

I think I'd be pushing for an egg challenge if he can tolerate royal icing.

Thanks for the info - he's had two skin tests a year apart so I suppose to false positives are unlikely. He has only reacted to loose cooked egg when he was a baby with an upset tummy. We then avoided egg, got referred (on the back of a major reaction to having sesame for the first time) and then have only given him baked egg (bar the royal icing and ice cream incidents!).
I'll def ask about seeing a dermatologist.

Ask the consultant to do a blood test allergy test - covers a broader range of allergens and also gives you the severity. Also, take the list of the next yrs vaccinations - ask about possible egg protein in them.

I'd stay away from all egg products unless testing under the supervision of the consultant. Sometimes you can't see the reaction - could be upset tummy or affecting sleep pattern.

Prior to our tests, we discovered how the allergen is cooked does vary the degree of reaction. However, the risk of anaphylactic reaction isn't worth the risk, as products aren't consistent.

You have probably researched products, but I find the orgran brand really good. There egg replacer is great.

Eczema - I found the following combination worked best for us: oilatum bath every day. Epaderm twice a day . hydrocortisone or eumovate for stubborn patches. If getting infected then demol bath once a week. You have probably tried these, but thought I would mention just in case.

It is hard work - I honestly don't know how my DS looks so healthy. His eczema use to be so bad and he is allergic to so many food types. Hope your DS grows out of it or you find a treatment plan to help his symptoms. They are so little to go through this.

Thanks May.
I think we are going to be a bit more clued up this time which will allow us to try and get on top of it as much as possible. At the last appointment I felt it was rushed and it was just a case of 'well he's still reacting the same to both, carry on and see you next year'. I def wasn't armed with enough knowledge to ask for other tests.
