Slightly different party / nut allergy advice needed please

I have done a search on nut allergy and party, but most of them relate to young DCs.

We are having a belated birthday party for DS and one of the guests has a nut allergy - so a bunch of teenagers, no need for parents to stay, 16yo so old enough to know what they can / cannot eat, I just want to make sure that I buy some stuff that he can eat.

Looking back through other threads, people seem to swerve the nut issue by the parent of allergic child sending food (unlikely to happen) or the host providing sandwiches, pom bears and chopped up fruit, which is not going to cut the mustard with a bunch of hip teens.

Now ordinarily I would order in a Chinese takeaway but that is obviously out of the question, DS in true teen style has been utterly unhelpful in getting information from the other boy. Now I know a couple of hours without food isn't going to kill him, although a teenager might think so, but I do want to make sure there is something other than crisps that he can have.

Any suggestions gratefully received

Pizza ? Fish and chips ?

MegBusset · 18/10/2013 22:50

Yep I would say pizza (standby food at friends' houses for my DS1), maybe check with the parents for a brand he's definitely ok to eat?

MistyB · 18/10/2013 22:52

Pizza?

You could also talk to the local take always and see if they could do nut free options. Providing the teenager is only allergic to nuts, Indian could be OK and so could Chinese but I would check with the takeaway and get some idea of the contamination risks. I would speak to the teenager's parents, they may have some ideas.

We have found most take away food to be really high risk. Hospital told us not to get Chinese or Indian take always as there can be a lot of hidden nuts. Fish and chips are usually ok, but maybe not that popular with teens. It is easy enough to get pizzas which are safe(sainsburys and quite a few of the big pizza companies). I don't know if Pizza Hut does take away but their allergy info is really good and they have quite a good choice for nut allergy sufferers(can get allergy list online). Pizza express is also great, but again I don't know if they deliver.

Wow thanks for the quick responses. Misty sadly I don't have contact info for the parents - typical teen boys, organise stuff face to face, but actually don't have minor details like phone numbers etc, so only way of contact seems to be yelling over an xbox headset Hmm

I reckon I'll just grab a load of pizzas then, I didn't realise it would be as easy as that, I was getting my knickers in a right twist about it.

The butterkist popcorn is ok as well and usually goes down well with my nut allergic son and his friends as nibbles to have after pizza.

If my allergic child was going to a party I would make sure the parents had my number irrespective of age. I would also want to have their number too

trixymalixy · 19/10/2013 22:53

No, no, no to Chinese or Indian takeaway!!

Pizza is the obvious choice, Dominos have good allergy information online.

neolara · 19/10/2013 22:56

Chinese takeaway food is a complete no-no. My dd is allergic to peanuts and the consultant told us that the greatest risk is with Indian and Chinese takeaways, cakes and biscuits.

Pizza would generally be fine. We eat in Pizza Express without difficulty. Burgers also fine. Or just proper food. The main thing is just to check every ingredient carefully. Many (most?) nut allergic kids will eat things labelled as "contains traces of nuts", but you need to avoid anything that is labelled as "not suitable for nut allergy sufferers". Personally, I would also avoid "may contain nuts' food. Probably best to check with kid what he does. If you make your own cake you can be sure it's safe. Some popcorn ok, but you need to check the label to make sure.

harverina · 22/10/2013 01:46

Absolutely not to Chinese or Indian. Even if they say they can do a but free option, the risk of cross contamination is huge.
Pizzas good idea Grin

Are you anywhere near a Wagamama? You can select a menu for allergen avoidance there. Obviously they do have peanuts on site though, so it depends on whether your guest is comfortable eating food produced in the same kitchen as peanuts. I guess you could talk to the manager of a local branch if you have one. Otherwise... pizza.
