Packed lunch help!

My 14 mth old ds with a milk/egg allergy has a packed lunch prepared by me most days.

We struggle to eat out and I always take him something.

Unfortunately, I'm in a rut and seem to do a similar thing each day! He has ham/chicken paste/soya butter sandwich, fruit of some sort and a puréed fruit pot, strips of chicken, breadstick, cucumber and hummus.

He's bored of it and so am I but I'm totally out of other ideas.

Please help!!!

Bagel with hummus and red onion chutney.
Pitta with falafel and salad.
Little tub of toasted sunflower or pumpkin seeds; fry them in a dry pan for few minutes then add a drop of soy sauce.
Flapjacks (really nice made with coconut oil instead of butter), add chocolate chips etc for variety.
My DD2 has a sort of thermos tub that she likes to bring soup to school in (carrot and lentil is her favourite).

Crap, I read your op as 14 year old Blush
Probably loads of inappropriate suggestions above sorry!

Wraps are also good for a change, how about that with peanut butter or something similar? Can you give him a soya yoghurt as well? I find if I put in a small ice pack with DS's lunch that the yoghurt stays cold till lunchtime.

Not at all alfalfa! All good ideas and I'm already planning to make flapjack tomorrow!

Oatcakes are a nice bread alternative. Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall has lots of alternative types of hummus which I think are pretty easy to put in a blender. Other nut butters are nice, too. If you make a batch of dairy and egg free cakes (try www.theppk.com/recipes/ for ideas - vegan site, and such great recipes) and freeze them, they are handy to put in a lunchbox.

Habbibu · 08/10/2013 22:02

Ooh - falafel - not sure if the store brands or mixes are dairy/egg free (though there's no reason they shouldn't be) but easy enough to make your own, and lovely hot or cold.

AlfalfaMum · 08/10/2013 23:37

I think I've talked myself into making flapjacks too..

Also, I just thought if you have a look in a decent healthfood store, you'll find all sorts of vegan options of things like egg free mayo, egg/dairy free sausages, and my dc all loved snacking on those marinated tofu cubes when they were toddlers.
Dd1 also loved cold cooked prawns on their own (I disagree with her there, but it was a handy way to get some protein into her).

Dd is allergic to milk eggs and nuts. Packed lunches can be hard I agree.
Our favourites are:

Tuna pasta
Vegetable soup
Crackers with spread
Tuna wraps/rolls/sandwich thins
Veggie or chicken Cous Cous
Tomato based veggie pasta
Avocado

harverina · 11/10/2013 03:47

Oh and soya yogurts - ds loves the chocolate alpro ones.

melonribena · 11/10/2013 20:59

Thanks! Haverina, what do u use instead of mayo in tuna pasta?

Potato rosti make a good alternative to bread. I make little patties of part cooked then grated potato and grill them to avoid sticking to the frying pan.

I also make tiny fish cakes with spinach, again grilled, for lunch boxes. These hold well together without egg if you make the shapes, roll in oil and leave in the fridge for 30 minutes or more before grilling.

And potato wedges. Not the most appetizing cold for adults but OK for toddlers.

harverina · 12/10/2013 10:16

I tend on use tuna in sunflower oil and don't bother with mayo. It's quite nice and you can add sweet corn or red onion if your dc like that. You can buy egg free mayo in asda/sainsburys/tesco but it needs to used within 28 days of opening so unless you are going to use it frequently it's not great value for money.
