hi my 4 wk old dd2 has r bad red rash on her face. it started on her forehead really raised angry looking rash with little white heads on it. i took her to doc who prescribed aveeno cream which has cleared her forehead up but she has now become r blotchy everywhere else on her face and behind her ears and on her head. the doc said it was eczema. several people have seen her face and said it could be the milk. she has been on sma gold ready made and in the last 2 wks sma formula powder. i know that hv say dont change the milk. but why do they say that? does anyone think that i should change to say farleys or cow & gate and see if her rash/spots clear up? my worry is that she is v happy on sma im worried she might not drink diff formula. please could someone help me. xx

It is not uncommon for babies to get a rash on their faces around this age however they are feeding. Avoid using perfumed soap powders and conditioner. Definitely do not use bubblebath or soap on her skin - use water only.If eczema is caused by milk it is usually due to cow's milk protein which is present in every traditional formula. If she is happy on her milk I would not change it.

Hi Jeanini,
I had exactly the same thing with my daughter at around the same age - rash on forehead and sides of her face. The doctor said it was eczema and nothing to worry about, and gave me diprobase cream which didn't help at all. I saw a homeopath which helped and tried different milks. The only one now which doesn't cause her face to get red and angry again is babynat organic cow's milk. It is expensive, £10.95 a tub. You can get it from some health food shops or from www.olimia.co.uk. I would definitely try it before her face gets worse (my dd would scratch so much that it started to bleed... hopefully yours won't get that bad) Good luck! I know how distressing it is.

DS (3wks) has the same rash on his face and he is also on SMA (gold to start with and now white). been told by midwife and HV that it is normal and to do with hormones. a few websites i've looked at have comfirmed this.

My DS got that and I eventually by 4 months onld convinced my GP that he was allergiec to that and was put on Soya. Now almost 4 years old he is still allergic to cows milk and prob only outgrow this by the age of 8 (if he's luck) because he had the milk so long!

Get a second opinion or third.
Try different milks and suggest Soya, because if Soya works for your baby you can get it on presciption.

I had exactly the same thing with my breast fed baby. I really looked horrible.
My father is a GP but he lives 250 miles away. He said it was thrush in his gut although he was unable to garuantee this without seeing it. Go and see your GP, he said. I did. He said it was baby spots but I refused to believe this as it was not just on his face but over his whole body and worse on his back and shoulders. He also really eggy, foul smelling wind which shouldn't occur in a breast feeding newborn. Df believed this was the result of the yeast infection in his gut.
Anyway, I had some Nystan prescribed for ds while I was waiting for the Gp appointment, it couldn't do any harm.
Anyway, it cleared up in a week!!

I really don't know if it was thrush or not but df gave me a pretty convincing reason for this being the case. I think many GP's will be slow to pick up on neonatal thrush.

I'm not saying this is what yours is, mind. Just that this is what I did in the saem situation.

MrsDoolittle · 24/06/2006 20:46

The fact that it appeared to flare up in the heat also indicated a yeast infection btw.

twickersmum · 24/06/2006 20:48

One thing i forgot to say is my dd's skin got worse - hot/redder during or straight after feeds.

MrsDoolittle · 24/06/2006 20:53

Exactly!!! That was when she got warm don't you think?

It could be anything, that's one of the sad things of eczema, it is difficult to find the root of the problem as every baby is different and they react differently to different things.

I tried several formulas until I found one that he was better with, the eczema was still there but he was much better in other aspects. Now we know he is allergic to milk so I guess whatever change I had made it would have been the same.

Keep applying Aveeno religiously, check for other options but be patient, eczema comes and goes almost depending on the weather.

mrs Doolittle, thats v.interesting as my 3mth old ds is bfed and has bad wind. (assumed it was whatever I had eaten ).
Didnt realise that thrush could cause this. Have been battling with thrush on and off for a few months. Did you not find it reoccurred and did you treat yourself too? (If you dont mind me asking )

mymama · 25/06/2006 05:34

mrsnoah my ds also had rash and foul smelling wind even though he was bf. He turned out to be allergic to wheat, dairy, eggs, fish and peanuts and the proteins were coming through in my milk. My allergist said foul wind/severe colic symptoms in a young baby can be an indicator of protein allergy to foods.

MrsDoolittle · 25/06/2006 12:06

I don't mind you asking atall.

Both of us were treated. Nystan for ds and Daktarin for me. Luckily we haevn't had trouble since. Ds's wind settled almost immediately and the rash disappeared, although he was colicky for the whole 3 months. He has the most beautiful peanut buttery complexion now - I'm so envious, being a redhead myself.

I think now that as much as I really didn't want to accept it, babies can be really difficult in the first few months and there aren't always any answers. I tried everything, infacol, coleif, treated him for reflux with gaviscon. It's all settled now, no problem atall.

mrsnoah · 26/06/2006 12:50

Hmm, mymama; dd2 has severe dairy allergy and so up until recently ds has been exclusively bfed while i cut out all dairy. Have just reintroduced small amounts back into my diet.. that could be it, but strangely no colic.
Mrs doolittle , will persevere.. Thanks !

Hi,
Haven't read the whole thread but I found that Cow and gate gave my dt2 a rash, but was fine with sma. So I think some formulas can disagree with babies. It might be worth switching.
