MMR and egg allergy

catesmum · 23/06/2006 14:08

has anyone else with an egg allergy had their MMR...our consultant has booked dd onto the children's ward to have hers because of possible risks and we're pretty nervous

My son did.
He too was booked into the hospital to have it done.
Absolutely no problems whatsoever - not even a temp from having the injection

Try not to be nervous its just a precaution and she is in the best place to have it

Good luck

My ds had them seperately, not because we were worried about the MMR, but because that's what we did for our ds1 4 years ago, at the height o the controversy. Ds2 had his measles and rubella, but they refused to do the mumps part due to his egg allergy and I doubt I could book him into hospital to have his mumps as they don't carry the seperate vaccines.

Good luck, I'm your dd will be fine.

As we are talking about jabs and egg allergies, has anyone's child had the flu vaccine with an egg allergy. Would they do something similar, like booking them onto the wards, or id it a no no jab. I ask because ds is in a high risk category and qualifies for a flu jab but was refused last year.

manitz · 23/06/2006 16:38

my dd had them under observation at hospital. As we didn't challenge her from the date she reacted to egg, we actually have foudn she's outgrown the allergy though still (at 3) allergic to dairy.

It's far removed from egg so it's just a precaution afaik.

williamsmummy · 23/06/2006 17:50

we have , and no problems.
I also have a friend who had no problem with her child.
Its a low risk, but the innoculation is worth having.

good luck

CarolinaMoose · 23/06/2006 17:54

is that only applicable to children with a severe egg allergy?

ds is allergic to raw and soft egg, but ok with thoroughly hard boiled. He is 20mo and hasn't had the MMR yet (because he isn't at much risk of exposure to measles and there are some autoimmune conditions in the family), although I'd probably want to get it done before he starts preschool next year, and I wonder if he'd need to have it done in hospital?

foxinsocks · 23/06/2006 18:01

dd had both hers done by the GP as her paediatrician (well respected allergy bloke) insisted there was no problem.

She did get a reaction but it was around 10-14 days later and it looked like a reaction to the measles part of it (she had a measles rash, temperature) so nothing to do with the egg.

foxinsocks · 23/06/2006 18:07

think consultant said that if the egg reaction was one that was definitely anaphylactic or had serious breathing effects then he would think differently

BernieBear · 24/06/2006 15:45

My ds has a dairy and egg allergy. I was offered to take him to the children's ward, but opted for the gp surgery. We were asked to stay there for an hour afterwards to check for any reactions and none happened. I was assured by a professor at the hospital that the egg white which the drug is held in is pretty small, not that in some cases that makes any difference.

mymama · 24/06/2006 21:08

My ds had his at gp - allergy consultant said no issue. We did have adrenalin etc on standby though just in case as my gp is quite thorough.

smoggie · 26/06/2006 09:26

ds1 had his at the local children's ward, he is egg and nut allergic. He was absolutely fine, no reaction not even a temp. We were allowed to go home after an hour. It is worrying, naturally, but hopefully the positive experiences posted here will help allay your fears. Good luck.

donnacb · 26/06/2006 13:01

my ds had his mmr at the docs with adrenalin at the stand by and was fine havent had 2 nd dose yet but will book in soon. dont worry if anything happens dd is in the right place

FairyMum · 26/06/2006 13:05

Mine have egg-allergy (not severe) and have had their MMR. Doctors said no problem. Think if allergy really severe they do it in hospital.

singersgirl · 26/06/2006 13:07

DS1 had his at hospital because of possible egg allergy, and they observed him for an hour - he is fine. I seem to remember the consultant saying that it was a theoretical risk, rather than a real risk, whatever that means, but it was a long time ago, so can't remember what else she said.

Chandra · 26/06/2006 13:11

HEartmum2jamie, our paediatrician said that DS could have the MMR, no doubt whatsoever, but refused point blank to give him the flu one. So.... We decided that if the flu one was not safe being told the MMR was totally safe (we were not offered an appointment in hospital) was bollocks so... he has not had any of them. Though he had SepVax the first time around, before we found out of his egg allergy.

Heartmum2Jamie · 26/06/2006 23:18

Thanks Chandra. Thant's pretty much what I thought. Well done for standing your ground! I guess I should start trying to find out if Pneumovax is ok for egg allergy kids.

youknowwhat · 27/06/2006 09:11

I am just another one with a child who had egg allergy and the MMR. No reaction whatsoever even if I actually postponed again and again as I was worried of the possible reaction.
TBH, I think it depends what kind of reaction you dd has. If it is just a skin rash and/or stomac issue, I wouldn't be too worried. As you have probaby guest from the previous emails, a lot of us have been in that situation and there has been no problem.
Good luck

catesmum · 28/06/2006 14:29

dd2 had her MMR this morning on the children's ward and is absolutely fine. She was pretty irritated with the whole experience as they checked her obs every 30 mins for 2 hours, but we found it incredibly reassuring especially as they had the adrenalin and the steroid injections standing by.

We're just wondering how she'll cope with her endoscopy that's going to happen in the next couple of months as she really objected to the identity bracelet and sitting in the ward for just a few hours!!!!

My ds (16 months) still hasn't had his MMR.
When he went for his allergy tests the hospital, they confirmed a high allergy to eggs but said he could have his MMR at the doctors surgery, no problems (although he had been rushed to hospital previously with a severe egg reaction of swollen lips and breathing difficulties).
BUT I took him for his MMR last night at the surgery and the nurse would not do it because of his allergy.
Now have got to wait for an appointment at the hospital so he can have it there. Surely the doctors knew he had an allergy to eggs so why did they not pick it up before going there last night. Also why did the hospital not advise us to have it done in the hospital?!

Bloomsbury · 12/07/2006 09:02

My daughter - 20 months - had her MMR very recently. She's allergic to egg (although we found out before she was weaned so can't predict how she'd react) so our local surgery refused to do it. She finally had it done in hospital, with a safety wait of 4 hours. No problems, although, like foxinsocks, she did get a rash and was a bit ratty about two weeks afterwards. The doctor said it was a delayed reaction and she's been absolutely fine since.

brimfull · 12/07/2006 09:03

ds had his in the hospital at 2yrs,no problems.

MumRum · 12/07/2006 09:30

My son had his 7 years ago and had no reaction... he is being allergy tested again today...
wish us luck....

CristinaTheAstonishing · 12/07/2006 09:55

Catesmum - good to hear your DD was well after the MMR.

MumRum - good luck with the testing today. DS (6) had about a dozen tests (in one day) and he actually quite liked the attention. He has no allergies at all (in fact it was a waste of time but the drs insisted).
