Yep, bit of a nightmare at the moment as DD has made veggie 'rumblings' in the past (she's 11yrs) but now she's getting serious about it. Trouble is DS 14yrs has had an anaphylactic reaction to nuts and he was nearly as bad when I made a quorn chilli last year.Sad

What on earth do I get as a meat substitute for DD? The iron issue isn't too bad as I know other foods that have iron and lots of things are fortified but what about the protein side of things? Any he p appreciated

tofu, cheese and eggs -

I would tell my dd to take over the cooking if she is that determined to be a veggieWink

You can get veggie substitutes for meat from websites like Goodness Direct. Companies like Frys do vegan hotdogs, sausages, chicken bits, burgers etc, without the egg white which ds maybe allergic to.

Also beans, chickpeas, lentils are great sources of protein.

trixymalixy · 31/08/2013 22:08

Is it the egg in quorn your DS is allergic to?

Rosesarebeautiful · 02/09/2013 21:15

I would give short shrift for the vegeterian plan too- occasionally one of mine tries that idea. We have too many foods to avoid as it is. They can be vegeterian when they're adults

If you do vegeterian meals be careful with shop bought pesto - my nut allergy DD reacted once. Never again!

Thanks for your replies.Smile I think it is something called the mycoprotein in the quorn. A doctor friend has since told me soya and tofu should be fine too.

Lentils. Beans. Cheese. Eggs. The Veg Everyday book by Hugh Fernly-Whittingsomething is very good for ideas. Also, Leiths Vegetable Bible.

I am veggie but avoid nuts as I have a dd who is allergic. I manage to eat a healthy diet pretty easily.

OHforDUCKScake · 07/09/2013 22:11

Not tofu if he is allergic to quorn, was it the soya bean in it?

OHforDUCKScake · 07/09/2013 22:12

Sorry didnt read your last post. How do you know it was mycoprotien?

I think if anaphylaxis is involved, its definitely worth speaking to a allergy specialist rather than a friend.

OHforDUCKScake · 07/09/2013 22:13

Oh gawd, again not reading, you said doctor friend!

Please ignore me.

(Ironically, its one of the rare times Im wearing my glasses too!)
