I'm off to my nephews 5th b-day party tomorrow, my sis in law has had a call from one of the kids parents saying that she is not to give said child any sugar at all as it will make the child very ill.

My Mum and I were chatting about this and just wondered if anyone knew anything about this, it must be hell to live with as nearly everything has some sugar in it.

Might be hypoglycaemia - means his pancreas isn't calibrated quite right to his blood sugar levels.
Not a problem if he eats slow-release complex carbs as it has lots of time to adjust as the food is gradually digested.
But if he eats refined sugar his pancreas goes into overdrive producing sugar-digesting enzymes. His blood sugar could then plummet to dangerously low levels causing a range of nasty symptoms, and possibly resulting in a coma.

Tiny amounts of sugar in bread etc wouldn't normally be a problem as they're outweighed by all the starchy carb, but sweets, biscuits, cake etc all bad ideas unless made using dried fruit instead of sugar etc

Bumping for the Saturady crowd before I go of to the party.

Also don't you think that maybe the parent should stay at the party to make sure there child doesn't get given any sugar especially if it makes them as ill as they have said it does.

A friend of mine has a sugar intolerance, diagnosed by a dietician, and she had to avoid most forms of sugar, inc some fructose.
She actaull ends up eating what many of us would go out of our way to avoid!
She can't really eat out much, as she ois also wheat free.

Think hers is to do with gall or bladder probs, and IBS.

If I were the parent I would stay.
