Gave cows milk by mistake

My 12 mth old milk allergic ds has avoided milk since 6 mths. He happily lives on bm and soya milk/products. This is due to him reacting to skimmed milk powder in baby porridge and a fromage frais.

He woke at 5 this morning, totally out of character. I went back to bed since he was also up in the night (teething) and dp took over. In his tired state he accidently gave ds cows milk on his shreddies.

After a few minutes he developed hives on the top of his chest, under his chin and a few round his mouth and on his face. We gave piriton immediately. Luckily ds was fine within himself, apart from scratching a bit, his breathing was ok, there was no swelling and he carried on happily playing until after about an hour the hives had all gone.

He's never had anywhere near that amount of cows milk before, has previously reacted to tiny amounts of skimmed milk in porridge etc, so we were obviously both very upset and scared. Luckily, all seems ok now. Phew.

I'm not sure why I'm posting, just I suppose because I knew people on here would understand

Don't worry. You did exactly the right thing giving piriton and it is good that your DS is now fine.

I have accidentally given milk and butter to my allergic DS and it does make you feel awful but as long as they are not anaphylactic then it is not a massive deal.

DH did this one morning by mistake. I tore shreds off him, then did exactly the same a couple of weeks later Blush.

Thankfully DS is not anaphylactic to milk, but he was pretty miserable Sad.

It happens. I think if DS was anaphylactic I wouldn't have any milk products in the house.

I think at some point everyone does it, it's not really feasible to remove all dairy products from the house, but as DCs grow they learn to manage the responsibility for checking foods.
My DS is now 11, he checks labels/talks to restaurant staff about his dietary requirements etc. when he was little we had a few accidental milk episodes:
-DM spilled her coffee, DS ran into the kitchen, slipped on the milky coffee slick and came out in hives.
-friend spilled tea, wiped it up with her fingers then, unthinking, touched DS's cheek (which erupted in hives)
-DS got halfway through a burger which turned out to have a buttered bun despite us explaining why he couldn't have the ketchup, his tongue swelled up etc.
-DM cooked a potato waffle (carefully label checked) on a grill straight after some cheesy vege sausages. "This tastes like dairy" said DS as his lips swelled.

Many, so many other things will happen as DCs grow up, the best you can do is learn from this, perhaps make up an early morning cup of soya milk in the evening when you're all less tired, and keep it in the fridge so mistakes like this are less likely.
Don't beat yourself up over it. Mistakes happen, he was fine, it's over now.

Thanks everyone! Glad we're not the only ones! Oh to be able to relax about food!
