Took four year old multiply allergic DS for a meal in a cafe today. We don't often do that, but have been to this cafe before and never had a problem with the sausages, chips and carrots we always have. After a few chips, DS said his food was making him tired. His bottom lip was rather swollen (but this sometimes happens when he has salt, no idea why). Then he said his tummy hurt. I asked if he needed medicine and he said yes, so I gave him 5ml piriton, then he asked for some more. After that, he was absolutely fine.

I don't want to see life in terms of allergies... does that sounds like a minor allergic reaction, or did I overreact? Usually, if he says his tummy hurts and I ask him if he needs medicine, he says no, and it freaked me out a bit that he asked for more. He is very sensible about his allergies and I am worried about making him fearful by seeing reactions everywhere...

Better to be safe than sorry! I would have done the same. Reaction could have been to something on the table that was invisible!

sounds like he was reacting to something I wld have done the same, usually u just know they need some antihistamine

No you absolutely didn't overreact. The consultant told us to give piriton if DS is complaining of a sore tummy. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Ah, thank you all Smile it's good to know I'm not being over-zealous. I suppose I knew really that giving piriton was the right thing to do, but we have to give it so rarely (am ridiculously super-careful when out and about). When DS said his food was making him tired, that shook me up a bit because I wondered if he was going to have a serious reaction - but some members of my family used to think I was basically exaggerating the whole allergy thing and, even though I haven't seen them for years now, it still rankles a bit I suppose.

Thank you so much for reassuring me.

I think if his lip was swollen you definitely did the right thing. We have just got back from France. Ds who is 14 is allergic to peanuts, nuts, coconut and sesame. We were told there was nothing in his lunch one day but he had a reaction and his mouth started tingling. I was trying not to panic, but starting to worry about ambulance calling in French. He was fine after antihistamine though. It's horrible isn't it? I always feel on edge.
