Excema and swimming

Hi

DS2 has had excema for the last two years - he's nearly three now. It is reducing and life is slowly getting better for us all. However, we went swimming at the weekend and for the first time it produced a horrid reaction - on his genital area. He screamed and scratched last night for hours. I just know that it was the swimming and am now terrified to take him again. We have been regularly over the last 2 years, with no previous problems.

Anyone else encountered this and any wise words to offer?

Thanks

NQSTM

NQSTM - really sorry to hear about this. Poor little thing, its absolutely heart wrenching when they are in such pain.
My ds1 has mild-mod eczema and we notice its always worse after swimming on his arms and legs.

I was thinking after we'd been on sat about whether we could put some sort of barrier cream (vaseline etc.) on him to limit the potential reaction as he just loves going.
Bit strange though for you that he's been fine previously. I take it you hadn't used any different products in the shower afterwards or swim pant/nappies - although he's prob too old for those isn't he?
Sorry but I don't know what to suggest other than to contact the swimming pool and enquire as to whether they'd used something different at the weekend? Hopefully other posters will have more useful advice.

ask Gp for a thick barrier cream. I used one for my son, we could only stay in water for a short time, but at least we could swim.
Also check for fungel infection, as pool water does irritate .
Pool water does burn my ezcema! ( AM 40 BTW!)

we have the same problem (am not following you williamsmummy, honestly), we asre off this weekend, and my dd1 will want to go swimming. we liberally apply the thickest cream we can (usually emulsyfying ointment over the top), then when she gets out she showers immediantly, then, when we get to where we are staying she soaks i na little tub for 10mins, then reapply her creams.

usually we do get a little infection at some stage of the holiday, so now i pack fucidin H or canasten HC.

Thanks ladies. Yes, I was thinking of a barrier cream, when we get the courage up to go again. Such a shame as he loves swimming and was doing so well. Oh well, there are far worse things that people put up with.

Thanks again

DD is 10 and has had excema on and off in varying degrees all her life. however, yesterday she went in a pool at a friend's house, and today is covered, literally in excema. behindher kness, creases of elbows, neck, throat, tops of legs, trunk etc. I'm astonished it could be so bad so quickly. think it's partly the heat and maybe too much chlorine in the pool? smothered in hydrocortisone tonight, bless her
