Reaction to Sunscreen

DD (9) reacts with red, hot face, neck and back to certain foods (salamis?) and also suffers contact dermatitis with latex rubber. The skin then dries and peels over the next few days. Now a similar reaction has started occurring with sunscreen (have tried loads - Piz Buin sensitive, Ambre Solaire, an Organic children's one, from memory). I think Simple was ok in the past, but can anyone recommend a sunscreen (factor 30ish) that doesn't bring their reactive DCs out in a sore rash? (Obv diff for each person, but any pointers welcome).

Piz buin is one that loss of people react too.

Ds had a terrible reaction to Soltan but we later discovered it was the almond oil in it and actually he was in fact allergic to nuts!

We're ok with Ambre Solaire sensitive, banana boat powder dry and P20 but ds is older. I've heard good things about ultra sun too.

We always test on inside of his elbow and leave for 24 hours when trying anything new.

We use the garnier factor 30, the spray one.

I use sunsense on my DS. I had to order it online but it was recommended by the eczema nurse and we've had no problems with it.

Thank you for your replies. I will definitely do patch test in future, and will look at your recommendations. I did see an article about Piz Buin being bad for allergies (after the fact!) how can they get away with calling it 'Sensitive' I wonder?

Worth noting that the reaction in some people only occurs when the chemicals react with the sunlight. Look for zinc oxide based ones. Lavera and Green People ones are good and not chalky white!

BlueBumedFly · 07/07/2013 14:28

The only one I can use on DD is Proderm, Boots stock it and its fab.

FuturePerfect · 07/07/2013 15:50

Hmm... We tried the Simple, which was seemed fine for several hours, but once she went out in the sun, her face puffed up all red again. So, it does look as though it could be a combination of the cream and the sun. Will persist with other recommendations, thanks.

ROC sensitive. might be worth a try.

MistyB · 07/07/2013 20:50

Lavera is good for us as is Green People and DS reacts to all sorts of chemical substances as well as varying sorts of natural products.

The only one my son can use withut hiving up and gettng a rotten rash is Soltan. Seems like a trial and error jobbie unfortunately.

freefrommum · 08/07/2013 09:32

Sunsense Sensitive factor 50. Think it's only available online and not cheap but well worth it in our case.

ClaireOB · 08/07/2013 10:01

Dermatologists are reportedly concerned about an increasingly common preservative, methylisothiazolinone (MI), which they say is causing an a rise in skin allergies to cosmetics, sunscreens etc - DM link . I can use Banana Boat without problems but react to most other makes. But as noted in previous posts, sensitivity seems to vary from individual to individual.

My son has a number of allergies too.

Australian Brand 'Sunsense'. They have a 'Toddler Milk' sunscreen at factor 50+ which is excellent. I think you can still get hold of free samples to try on their website too.

JohFlow · 08/07/2013 11:57

Update : Just checked on website - also says that you may be able to get SunsSense on prescription. Guess that would make it free - yayy!
