FLIPPING FAIRY WASHING POWDER!

So, after years of ds being eczema free, I thought I would try Fairy Non-Bio - what with it being marketed as especially kind to delicate skin and all that... and half the price of Filletti, our usual powder. Hey presto - ds is covered in a dry, eczema type rash. So, not only have I wasted money on a powder we can't use, but I'll have to wash his entire wardrobe again - in Filletti - in the hope that it will help get rid of the rash. Am unhappy bunny.

hello

it might not be Fairy but just that its different to what you normally use. sensitive skin always flares up to change.
my dd has sensitive skin and marks so easy even by touch. i use fairy and comfort sensitive softner. i tried persil sensitive as it states its kind to alleric skin and she cam out in a really bad rash... but since my mpther has been looking after her, she has been washing some of her clothes in her non sensitive powders and my dd's skin has not reacted so maybe because it was a slow introduction... i dont know... i guess its just best to stick to what their skin is used to.

... God that sounds really unhelpful. think i've confused myself..

Bluebear try boots-own sensitive washing range for a good softener. I used it when DS had baby eczema and it kept the clothes/towels nice and soft but with no fragrance.

Unfortunately for all of us Boots Sensitive skin washing powder is NO MORE. I have had a conversation with as assistant today who phoned the head office who confirmed this. I also use eco-balls which are great, for most washes, but Son's football kit sometimes needs a bit more oomph. Very Very sad and distressed about this. The liquid is apparently continuing, for now.

Fairy is absolutely no good, nor is Surcare (made me go Bright red!)

If anyone know of any others that are perfume free, I'm sure we'd all be grateful to know!

littlelamb · 10/06/2009 17:35

I swapped from Fairy to the M and S sensitive non bio. Not perfumed at all, which can take some getting used to, but so far it's been great for us. It's on buy one get one free an awful lot too, so I've stocked up in the last few weeks

SleeplessinSwansea · 13/06/2009 21:53

My LO's eczema got worse after Eco-balls. Not convinced about the "no detergent residue" thing, if you look at the waste water it is sudsy just like regular washing powder.

AcademicMum · 13/06/2009 23:40

I also use Eco-balls on occassional washes. They are best for stuff which is not very dirty, but just needs a bit of a clean through than for really dirty stuff. Otherwise we don't use fabric softener it makes the fabric more "sticky" so detergent residue is more likely to hang around, we use the extra rinse cycle and we use supermarket own brand non-bio powder (the less perfumed the better). Whenever we have tried to use biological wash powder, both ds's skin flares up something awful.

Hy academic mum

Years ago I was told the only washing powder to use for my children was Persil auto non bio. It made a big difference. Also, Comfort pure is the safest one to use.

Hope this info helps.

littlelamb · 24/06/2009 18:23

ime, Persil, even the non bio one, makes me and my dc itch like mad. I recomended the M and S non bio earlier on this thread. I popped in yesterday and they seem to have changed it So back to the drawing board for us

shonnomanom · 02/07/2009 19:56

my friends children have always had sensitive skin and so she uses fairy non bio powder, but a few months ago she ran out and the shop only had the tablets. She never thought anything of it until the kids started to come out in a rash all over their bodies.
It soon went a way when she changed back to the powder.

Mumsnut · 02/07/2009 20:00

I swear by Filetti but it has been unobtainable recently

onepieceofcremeegg · 02/07/2009 20:02

Gosh this thread is 5 years old. I realised when mention was made of ariel non-bio which afaik hasn't been around for well, years

craftaholic · 15/07/2009 17:41

Hi Julie169, read your message about Boots wash liquid, I have phoned them today and have been told it is being back in the shops at the end of the month, although they tell me they have altered the formulation for health and saftey reasons. It now has added silicon and soap, plus something else but the guy I spoke to didnt know what. Ive asked them to send me a full ingrediant list, they said they would call me back one day this week. If I hear any more, i will let you know. From Craftaholic

MummieGee · 21/07/2009 05:59

Hey there. I use Surcare, because I react to even the slightest amount of perfume in washing powder. You can get it in all the supermarkets - tesco, sainsburys, co-op, but the powder is the best version. The liquid wasn't as good, I found.

I was allergic to ecover, too and didn't think the laundry balls were that good when I tried them. . But maybe that's just me.

Hope that's helpful.

My daughter's skin used to break out in eczema really badly, until I switched to Liquid Soap Flakes (£3.05 Waitrose/Tesco Extra). Surcare was almost as bad for her skin as Fairy. Now we use 'simply' - the sensitive version and she seems fine with that. Funnily enough she also seems fine with Vanish oxi action powder (if I need to get stains out). My husband's skin, which has a tendency to be dry also seems to be better, but more so with the soap flakes. I don't use conditioner of any kind, but have thought of using white vinegar, as it's supposed to help.

nickelhasababy · 02/05/2012 13:52

i wonder if it's the soap powder that's cause dd's dry skinness...
we use sainsbury's non-bio.

she doesn't itch, but she does have blotchy dry skin.
dunno, it's her face too.

we use oilatum for moisturizing (the only part of her body not blotchy and dry is her nappy area...)

dairyfreebabyandme · 02/05/2012 14:06

We now use Liquid Soapflakes (£3.05 Waitrose/Tescos Extra). Eradicated my daughter's eczema completely. Or I use Simply Sensitive (Sainsbury's) which comes in tab form.

WhiteTrash · 02/05/2012 22:21

Wowzers! This thread was started in 2004!

Fwiw I use soap nuts, im not sure if they help or not but I darent go back to fairy. I miss the smell though.
