Eczema help for DN please - worried

I hope someone is able to offer some words or wisdom here as I'm quite worried about my little nephew

He is 9 months old and has been diagnosed with eczema. It's pretty severe (gp's words) at the moment.

His face is covered with infected eczema, he has been prescribed with Flucloxacillin to take 4x daily. It's made him projectile vomit. If dsil takes him back, is there another antibiotic that could be prescribed?

Dsil is using steroid cream and emollients as directed by the Gp and also an antibiotic cream. Is there any particular type of cream that may be better than aqueous cream?

None of us have any experience of eczema and the poor little mite is covered.

Piriton doesn't seem to be helping the itching either.

Would it be worth seeing a dermatologist privately? The Gp has referred but has said that there will be a long wait. If so, can anyone recommend a dermatologist in London - we are in Ealing.

There's a website called itchy baby (I'm not sure how to link it but it'll come up if you google it) which I found useful. I second scratchsleeves too. I'm interested that lots of people have had allergy testing - I've been back to the gp time and again for my DS's eczema and she won't refer him despite him having some horrible flare ups. I don't like to keep using steroid cream as I'd rather discover why it's happening in the first place.

I recently saw an ad in the window of lloyds pharmacy for their eczema advice service. The lady I spoke to was excellent - she ran through exactly what I should try when a flare up happens, how often to apply the creams etc.

So sorry to hear he is so poorly. GPs are generally rubbish when it comes to eczema. A good emollient can make all the difference. (I use diprobase, kids on Dermol and mum on doublebase!) hope you get to see a specialist ASAP. Poor mite.

Doublebase is fab stuff, but we used to reapply every nappy change rather than twice a day when DS was tiny and his skin was at it's worst.

Creams can be trial and error - he doesn't do well with diprobase, cetraben, E45 or (worst of all) aqueous cream. Oilatum junior in the bath is good though.

For short term use steroids, though sounding scary, can be extremely helpful IME.

Fingers crossed it gets better as he gets older, bless him.

I agree steriods are fine in the short term. I've had to use a very strong steroid for over 6 months but my skin is fine.

Glad to be able to update positively!

Dn is now a totally different looking baby! The antibiotics that the hospital prescribed have cleared the infected eczema on his face up a treat! He still has dry patches and some flakiness there, but honestly, he's almost back to his old self

He has the eczema all over his body now, well patches all over his body but not infected and not giving him any trouble - he's happy as larry. The hospital also suggested epiderm cream which hasn't had much effect yet unfortunately.

Thank you all so so much for the advice - hugely appreciated. Db and dsil have decided to take dn to the professor in Windsor as suggested a little higher up and hopefully the cause can be diagnosed and treated.
