Symptoms of wheat allergy - sore bottom ??

Hi, My DS is 9 months old and up until about 3 weeks ago had never had any sort of nappy rash or sore bottom. But he's now had a very red (as if he'd sat in a really hot bath) bottom followed by very sore patches, lasting for about a week. I wonder if he could be allergic to either wheat or marmite as from memory I seem to remember him having these as new foods around the same time. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm at my wits end as he cries whenever I have to wipe his bottom and the HV said its probably just teething but he def. isn't teething. Haven't changed nappy brands or wipes or anything else I can think of.

I havent heard of this symptom (am mildly allergic to wheat and yeast) but if you suspect a food reaction, then take it out of his diet, see if things improve & reintroduce around 3 weeks later to see if the same thing happens again.

tbh, I wouldnt suspect a food reaction first, unless there is a really strong family history.
My babies went sore for a variety of reasons, including teething, minor virus and using plastic nappy covers.
Have you tried using terry nappies with no plastic pants/wraps to ease the problem, or Sudocreem to help heal the sore bits?

Thanks for the reply. I am trying the elimination thing and sudocreem for his sore bottom. There's no history as far as I know of any allergies. I guess its like a lot of these things, sometimes you never find out what the reason is. Will try terry nappies as at least they look like they might let his bottom breathe a bit more.

I expect he may be getting some back teeth which arent showing yet. His wee is more acidic causing soreness.

If bottom sore the wipes will sting. I found sudocrem made things worse & exp. Zinc & Caster oil is fab.

Oh and the weather has been ALOT hotter lately - might be getting a bit hot in there

Hi there!

I agree that perhaps a food allergy may not be the 1st thing I would look for but.......

My ds is allergic to wheat and did/does get a VERY sore bottom. He would become red wihin minutes of soiling a nappy and if it wasn't changed within 10-15 minutes his skin would blister, bleed and he would have open sores. In his case, his nappies would be full of mucous and it would kind of (TMI alert!!!) slide off his bottom. It must have been very acidic to cause this.

I agree that you can always try eliminating it from his diet and see how you get on. I found that my ds showed improvement almost immediately, within days.

Hi
I am coeliac myself and I have read that one sign of wheat intolerance is in the tools. Sorry to be so graphic here, but our bodies do not absorb the nutrient as gluten works as a barrier and it brakes things down. Fat will float consequently and there must be other chemical reactions to affect the skin for a baby.
It all disappears with a GF diet. I still have anemia and I am 17 weeks pregnant but I am not feeling sick and I am back to normal.
A GF diet should be a priority! Contact the coeliac society for more info!

I can recommend Metanium cream for nappy rash. its fab

I would def cut out the wheat for a while. Wont do any harm. Just be careful, its in lots of things ( like some yoghurts for example)

hi,
i am having the exact same problem as you!
i took my daughter to the docs with a bad nappy rash and was given treatment for thrush, it did clear up but has come back with a vengeance! at one point she had the rash going up her back, i am not saying she didn't have thrush but i don't think that is the problem now. i have wondered if it may be the nappies as someone told me that a friend had that problem, and i had just changed nappies. if anyone can give me any ideas i would be very grateful!
