I'll try and keep this as brief as possible.

22 month old son with severe allergies, off the top of my head, milk, egg, banana, pear, sharon fruit, peas, green lentils, sunflower seeds/oil, soya, spinach, all meat -lamb, beef chicken pork, raw potatoes theres more but Ive not got my list with me.

Hes had blood tests and RAST tests and currently under the care of Dr Fox in Guy and Thomas.

Allergies range from anaphylaxis to crippling stomach pain with green mucousy nappies.

As you can see, his diet is very limited but bread and fish are staples.

On his recent SPT peanuts were negative. And it never crossed our mind to test wheat as he has it daily with no adverse effects.

Except we've just had more rast results. It was 34.4 for wheat and I feel like ive been punched. Do I really have to stop wheat now? Thats painfully high, and peanut was 35.5, does this mean he IS allergic to peanuts and wheat?

This sounds very stressful. Do you make bread yourself? We've been making great bread with Spelt flour...you could try rye bread?

OHforDUCKScake · 02/04/2013 17:04

My ex parents were down this weekend, exMIL said she'd guve me her bread maker as she didnt get in with it.

This will be my saviour wont it?

Yes...we don't use a bread maker but some people swear by theirs. It's wonderful making your own bread when you get into it...you can do loaves or buns and make more when you need more...it;/s fresh and much cheaper too.

There are tonnes of bread recipies online....you can play once you are confident and come up with your own.

If wheat is a problem, I would not use spelt as it is so close to wheat, it cannot be labelled as wheat free. Rye is also a gluten grain so not really a great wheat alternative.

FWIW I have just been told that both my boys have to avoid oats, corn and millet in addiction to gluten grains and are really struggling with what this means for our diet so I feel your pain.

We also had negative SPT for sesame two years ago and I have recently started putting loads of sesame into homemade granola as it is a great source of calcium. DS2 has been having coughing, morning vomiting and wheezing episodes that I have been really struggling to pin down to something specific and lo, RAST tests last week show sesame are still a problem, so I am waiting to see if these random reactions decrease / stop.

Allergy tests are only an indicator. You can have false positives and negatives.

The only true way to diagnose an allergy is food challenge.

If he is eating wheat with no issues then I wouldn't stop giving him wheat.

OHforDUCKScake · 03/04/2013 15:04

Really?

I mean, I knkw of the false results but the rast test was so high at 34.4 it just feels wrong to be giving him wheat.

I just called guys hospital and left a message so i hooe they can guide me.

If he's been eating it with no issue up until now then i think that cutting it out may be the worst thing to do. All these new studies seem to be showing that actually exposure maintains tolerance.

I'm not an allergy specialist though, so definitely getting advice from Dr Fox is the best thing to do.
