dd used to react to peas when she was a baby (around the weaning age time) - those and courgettes were a big no-no.

I never got her allergy tested for them but excluded them from her diet and retried at a later stage and she was fine.

IMO, a lot of children who are very atopic (i.e. react to alot of things and have things like eczema, asthma) get reactions to things that aren't necessarily true allergies but with the passage of time, they seem to go away.

We have found this the case with peas, courgettes, pineapple, chicken and fish!

Yes, a friends dd is terribly allergic to peas. Also other pulses - lentils, chic peas etc. Big problem as gram flour and pea protein is used in lots of processed food.

RTKangaMummy · 10/05/2006 13:00

BTW he is 11 years old

Very interesting to know that it excists

AFAIK he doesn't have asthma don't know about excema

Peas are in the legumes family and are mildly related to peanuts (protein). It is very possible that her ds is allergic to peas, but like the pp said, he is likely to grow out of it with the passage of time.

mymama · 11/05/2006 11:16

Peas were part of the first group skin testing for my ds. Allergist selected most common allergens and peas are in the peanut/soy/bean family (legumes) and are quite often an allergen. Don't think they cause anaphylaxis as such but are certainly up there with peanut.

Piffle · 11/05/2006 11:17

I'm honest to god allergic to raw celery...

Heartmum2Jamie · 11/05/2006 12:17

Anyone see city hospital last week when they had a lady on allergic to lettuce?

Chandra · 11/05/2006 18:30

DS is sensitive to peas, actually, he is sensitive or allergic to most legumes. I was in the hope that he will outgrow the allergies but they seem to be growing worse, his eyes get more puffed now and the skin of the face becomes more raised now than what it did when DS was younger Sad

So, yes, it's possible.

RTKangaMummy · 11/05/2006 20:06

Thanks for all these Smile

I am amazed that I had never heard of it

I was convinced it was chinese whispers Blush

Most allergies are an immune response to proteins. Peas are defo a possible allergen.

Ellasmum11 · 10/01/2020 14:28

My son and I both have an anaphylactic reaction to peas and lentils. For us the increase in vegetarianism and veganism is making life very difficult. Because peas and lentils are not on the list of top 10 allergens companies don't even have to labels foods that contain small amounts of them. We can no longer eat out, and can't eat any processed foods - even products like cheese, bread, chicken and meat may contain pea protein or pea starch. I can assume allergy to pea and legume is very real and a serious issue for some of us.

fazakerleyjackie · 10/01/2020 14:37

I have a relative with an allergy to peas/legumes.

He is now mid twenties and had it since a child. He lived with us for a while, and I learned to check everything ingredients wise. I had not heard of it before he came to stay.

He still gets a very severe reaction as described by Ellasmum.

MAFIL · 10/01/2020 22:54

Legume allergy is not that uncommon. My DS is allergic to lentils. Its commoner apparently in countries where lentils are used as a popular weaning food, including Spain, where it has a much higher incidence than peanut allergy. My DS is ok with other legumes and pulses fortunately (except peanuts). I wouldn't be surprised if we see increasing numbers of people with this problem as meat eating becomes less popular.

DogInATent · 12/01/2020 21:21

It's possible to be allergic to pretty much anything you can think of, but some are more common than others.

Although it's not a true allergy (the difference is technical) look up aquagenic urticaria as an example of how seemingly unlikely the cause of a genuine reaction can be.

Just because you've never heard of it...

I can't believe I've stumbled across this! I'm on the weaning journey now and have a suspicion my DD could be allergic to peas...I just didn't think you could be so have passed it off until now
