DS is allergic (in some cases severely) to milk, egg, soya, wheat, peanuts, cod, kiwi...

not sure what, if anything, I should be avoiding, and I am also worrying about after the birth. Will I have to wait and see what (if anything) the baby reacts to, or will I get more support earlier on this time round?

I have allergy clinic for DS tomorrow as it happens, would it be ok for me to ask these questions in his appointment? (it is very very early days in the pregnancy)

I'm not a medical person, but I think it is largely down to luck. I was careful to avoid peanuts with DD1 because that was the advice. Took the same approach with DD2 and she is severely allergic. There were no significant changes in my diet or habits between having the two girls.

No harm asking at the appt though.

Good luck with the pregnancy OP.

(disclaimer this is a completely non-medical perspective)

I'm allergic to a lot of things and it gets a lot worse when I'm stressed (allergies create an inflammatory reaction, stress creates an inflammatory reaction, they seem to add up to something worse - allergies are funny things, they're not linear). AND stress is more common / endemic now than it has been in the past. AND severe food allergies are more common.

So. My COMPLETELY non-medical conclusion is that stress while pregnant is bad. So my advice is actually don't worry about food too much, do meditation and be more zen like.

I acknowledge your disclaimer Orbis and as I said, my perspective is similarly amateur - but I was far more stressed with my non-allergic DD (I stayed in my high pressure job, working shifts). With my allergic DD, I was far less stressed (well, other than caring for a toddler).

My DS has multiple allergies. When pregnant with DD, I asked about the possibility of her having allergies and what to do. The advice was to not avoid anything, breast feed until 6 months and they skin prick tested her before I weaned her.

She's only allergic to egg.

Two took inspiration from my previous theory clearly being crap to do some research. Seems body products may be implicated www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa013536.

stillstuck, yes ask. we did and were advised to keep ds2 totally dairy free for first two years. no biggie as i bf and ds1 allergic to milk so all cooking was df. He turned out to have cmpi rather than allergy. still no milk but at least not another allergy! he did however have asthma and a couple of allergies of his own Hmm

Hi thank you for your posts was helpful to feel it was ok to ask!. I managed to squeeze in the question at the end of the appointment. I was told that there was no clear cut answer but the current thinking was not to avoid anything, and to just look out when I am breastfeeding and if there are any signs of eczema then that will be the time to avoid allergies

Orbis I am not sure your post is particularly helpful. I wasn't stressing (don't have time to be stressed I have got a toddler to chase after!) I just wanted information. Incidentally, I was very relaxed when pregnant with ds, I was only working part time in an easy job and had three months mainly off at the end going on various holidays and having fun with friends.

Trixy it must have been reassuring to have skin prick test when you weaned. I might ask about that nearer the time. Ds had an anaphylactic reaction to his first taste of cows milk at 6 months old! Did you avoid dairy in your diet whilst breastfeeding?

Hello, the anaphylaxis campaign will be able to help you - they have a free helpline too - www.anaphylaxis.org.uk

StillStuck · 19/03/2013 20:13

oh thank you Davan, that is a really good idea Smile
