Has anyone got a baby with wheat allergy? we are waiting for a hospital appointment at mo (after being fobbed off for weeks). gave her porridge yesterday and day before and she seems to be having a reaction to it that has steadily got worse from yesterday - bad diahorrea undigested food and loads of mucus. have cut out wheat for last 6 weeks and that seems to be working. She has eaten a couple of oat biscuits in this period and I don't remeber any bad reactions. Is Japanese rice ( glutinous sticky rice) a problem???will piriton help now while she has this bad diahorrea???

it could be gluten... that is found in oats as well as wheat.

oat biscuits presumably didn't cause a reaction as it was a much smaller quantity

I agree with SL gluten could be the problem.

Hi there Gummy,

My ds (22 months) has a wheat allergy, get horrible nappies, pretty much a s you described, foul smelling, undigested food & mucous filled.

We cut wheat out of his diet 6 weeks ago too and he is soooooo much better and is even putting on weight! He has ready brek with rice milk every morning for breakfast and has been ok......although he has been more whiney recently, rubbing his tummy etc. Hard to know if it's something he's eaten, he's hungry or if he hurts with his teeth.

I guess it could be the gluten. We pretty much follow a gluten free diet (most recipies are wheat/gluten free), but haven't thought about breakfast.

Not sure if piriton works for this kind of allergy.

I hope you get some answers from the hospital.

thanks for your advice evryone. heartmum2jamie ready brek contains oats i think so i might stay away from that. wheat free bread (tried them all) is pretty horrible mine wont eat it.what help have you had from GP? I have been told that after initial consultation in paediatric dept it will take 3 - 6 months before she can see a "specialist"! I think they hope your child will grow out of it before they give tests. my GP also told me that i shouldnt "deprive" baby of wheat until tests have been done, but i am not prepared to let her have diahorrea and a sore bum for 6 months!

She will need to have wheat for a good while before the tests or they will be pointless - having said that if they suspect that your baby might be coeliac why on earth can't your GP organise a simple blood test?

Gummy, I bypassed my gp all together. In the end, we decided to book a private appt and only had to go to the gp for the referal letter. We were very lucky that we just happened to have a private clinic attached to our local hospital, and the paed we saw is a gastroenterologist, who also specialises in food allergies and nutrition.

If you really want you dd seen faster and you have the £, try going to your gp and ask him to refer you to a specialist. It is much quicker and then once you are on their books, you can then be put on their NHS list (if they have one). If we had waited on the NHS, we would probably be lucky if we had our first appt next month and as it is, we have a follow up appt on the NHS in July.

Good luck! Oh, and threebob has a very good point about the gluten. If they are going to test her for coeliac disease, she will need to be on a wheat/gluten diet for 6 weeks I think it is.
