am i correct in saying i should avoid the following foods until 6 months?

  • dairy products, wheat(so bread, pasta, cereal, crackers and biscuits), shellfish, citrus fruits
  • honey, pate, unpasteurised cheeses until 12 months
  • and nuts until 3 years?

but is it okay to give normal fish?

We have a slight family history of ezcema. We decided to avoid all wheat, dairy, honey, egg whites, citrus, shellfish, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers etc. until dd was 1 year.

We followed the book "What should I feed my baby" by Susannah Oliver.

So far, so good (dd is 17 months old).

No idea what the general guidelines are to be honest. I'm sure someone else will be along soon!

also after 6 months, i can stop sterilising all feeding equipment except for bottles can't i?

and it is okay to give purees of meat & veg that we would normally eat warm, cold isn't it for convenience when out and about? all this weaning stuff is mind boggling!!

I would wait for 12 months for dairy and wheat and 12 months for fish. Definitely 12 months for egg and 3 years for egg. I have no eczema/asthma or allergy in my family and my 3rd child had allergy to wheat, dairy, egg, fish and nuts. He is still allergic to egg and nuts.

Would be okay to stop sterilising. Hospitals don't sterilise at all anymore - just hot soapy wster. My opinion is that they are sucking on their toys/pram/fingers anyway so can't be any worse than that unless you are sterilising those each time as well. I also stopped boiling water after six months as they get a few mouthfuls of their bath water or pool water (if doing swimming) and it does not seem to affect them.

3 yrs fot nuts.

threebob · 01/05/2006 01:59

1 year for dairy and wheat
2 years for eggs and fish
nuts until 5

the honey and pate are because of food poisoning - so whatever the guideline is in your country.

Just adding an extra couple of things...I would avoid citrics and honey until 1 year old, and kiwi and pineaple.

sorry didnt mean to repeat myself Smile

In a way, avoiding these things could prevent further allergies. However, if you remove them from the diet and reintroduce them later chances are that you will see a change for the better in your child condition.

funnybones · 01/05/2006 22:21

thank you, not sure what to do at the mo exzema isnt that bad really just two sores - we are vegetarian so he gets protein from dairy - and he loves yoghurt cheese and eggs bless him

Funnybones - Tilly's excema is aggravated by things like kiwi, hummus and tomatoes. We too are veggie and after discussing diet with the consultant dermatologist she advised to only cut out things which made it really bad (for us scrambled egg but OK in cake etc.). I am happy to do this and try to minimise skin contact by her eating kiwi with a fork, hummus on a cracker etc. Couldn't contemplate stopping her dairy! She has also had nuts.
Covers head and awaits big telling off!!Grin

I wouldn't tell you off. As peanut allergies are unheard of in both my country and DH's (mothers are even adviced to eat plenty of nuts during pregnancy and we stuff kids with peanut butter sandwiches), I thought DS will be OK. DS had a peanut being 2 yrs old and presto, he didn't even swallow it but now he is allergic to peanuts.

veNivIDiViCkiqV · 02/05/2006 00:10

I thought nuts was 5 years as well. Sterilising doesnt need to be done at all. Just a good wash - preferably in a dish washer.

The current guidelines are to avoid all solids until after 6 months....

Chandra · 02/05/2006 00:20

It is, for children who have immediate family with peanut allergy.

The guidelines just changed this year so I guess the weaning for allergic children guidelines will take a while to be updated. :)

Laundry lover - your daugter's sensitivity to Kiwi may be exarcebated by continual eating. Kiwi allergy can be affiliated to latex allergies.

Good reading on the subject can be found on www.allergy-clinic.co.uk/food_allergy_for_doctors.htm

About half way down the page under section titled 'Other Food-Pollen Allergic Reactions".

Of course, may be completely irrelevant. I used to eat kiwi all the time as a child - contact with it now induces severe asthma attack - borders on anaphalactic reaction.

There are few hospitals qualified to deal with these and very few will test due to risk of anaphalactic shock, but all should tell you that if you continue to expose yourself to products with which you have any type of allergic reaction, the reaction will become gradually more and more severe.

laundrylover · 03/05/2006 20:32

Thanks Cal I'll have a look at that. It's difficult to cut out all foods that make her skin flare up though or her diet would really suffer. she only has kiwi every now and again so that one would be easy to cut out. our consultant says to only stop foods with a def severe reaction. in the excema society leaflet kiwi appears along with strawberries, tomatoes etc. as very likely irritants.
