My DS has had eczema since 3 months old. It was under control with diprobase ointment and steroid cream for bad flare ups. When I went to see the HV, I asked for a repeat prescription for the diprobase but she decided to give me another cream and since then it has been completely out of control. We have had numerous different creams since then (when I went back to diprobase he was sensitive to that too)and even oral antibiotics from the doctor which tasted so vile that my DS was violently sick if he swallowed any. I am now at a complete loss as to what to try now - so far have tried the following -
diprobase
doublebase
unguentum M
cetraban
fucidin
E45
Oilatum cream and bath oil
Hydromol
Aveeno
Allergenics cream
Any advice from those of you with experience of dealing with eczema would be much appreciated. Thanks

The National Eczema Society are wonderful. They have a free advice line - 0870 2413604 - and may be able to help. You should insist that your GP refers you to a dematologist as soon as possible. Your poor babe! Hang in there - eczema is hell but you will find ways of coping, honest.

anyone??
Should also have said gp advised bathing twice daily with the oilatum - I have been doing this but am wondering whether too much bathing will make things worse.

Thanks vivie - I'll give them a try and also go back to GP.

look at diet? if bfding, remove all dairy (cows milk and products) if weaned/formula, do same....look at nanny formula

worked for ds, worth a try for you?

donnie · 27/04/2006 15:02

have you tried wet wrapping? that worked brilliantly for dd.It is quite a bothersome procedure but worth the effort IMO.A dermatologist would be able to help.

The baths certainly soothe the itch, but the warm water can make the sore patches go darker in colour, so sometimes it looks worse in the water. You know that you can put the double-base cream on before you put them in the water? Makes quite a difference to my LO.

hi lorre i realy feel for you it's so frustrating when your'e lo is so uncomfortable.te little girl i look after had eczema quite badly as a baby have you tried epiderm cream this is v good and can be used as a soap in the bath.also using oats wrapped in muslin or teatowel in bath was good for her too.
i agree with sophable you should really consider looking at food in your'e diet if bf or his if weaned.cutting out all allergenic foods eg dairy, wheat, nuts, even soya.
the lo i look after was intolerant to dairy, wheat, yeast, nuts, soya, egg, grapes|(including if her mum drank wine as she was bf) and bananas.she's 4 now has grown out of all but has anaphalactic allergy to dairy.
please pester your'e gp for a referal to a specialist unfortunatly the help and advice is there you just have to fight for it.
good luck

The only cream that is not in your list and that was the one that worked better for DS was Eucerin 10% Urea, but no cream will be of much help unless you have cleared the infection first.

In terms of things for the bath, the only thing that works for DS is Oilatum Plus although it only maintains healthy skin not improves the thing when he has a bad episode, for worst episodes the only thing that relieves the skin is a bath oil called Emolitar, the thing is unbelievable but I have only managed to find it in Spain (although Irish produced).

Good luck!

DS has eczema which we have more or less managaed to keep under fab control - but when he is teething you can get a flare-up. The thing is that if you find a combination that works for you - stick with it as too many products can also cause a flare up with their skin trying to get used to it. There is a bathwash called Emulave (got it in boots in Dublin) and if DS is particularly bad I'll use that as the soap substitue instead of unguentum m and I find it fabulous. If yopu want to CAT me your address I can post you some? I have heaps!
